Dave Kiff at Pacific Tool is grinding me a reamer for a 30/338 Lapua 40 deg Imp which will later this fall be used to make a 338 version as well. I designed it with the neck .405" long for greater throat life, I'm told it will be good for many thousands of rounds now just from the longer neck.

I know of several guys using the 338 Imp version, standard neck length, they get over 3000 fps with the 300gr SMK in 32" and longer barrels no problem. [Smile]

Brent,
What action are you using? Would be interested in how yours comes out. Am looking for something in that class and your improved version might be the answer. Thanks.

The 30/338 Lapua Imp and the 338 later on are both being done on Remington 700's, one chromo, the other SS.

The 30/338 is using a 1.35" straight tube 30" 3 groove Lilja 11 twist in a 10" barrel block on a Master 1000 BR stock.

The 338 will likely have a 40" bbl, 3 groove, 10 twist in a bbl block for the 300gr SMK. I might put this one in a McMillan A5 stock, not sure yet. Without a bbl block, I'd stay under 32" with a straight taper on the bbl. [Wink]

Brent.
I just wander how you get the boltface on the Rem.700 big enough for the large Lapua case??

And what velocities do you think you'll manage with the 30/338 Lapua, using 180grs, and 200grs. bullets??

I'm seriously thinking of building a switch-barrel rifle, using the Lapua case all the way.
30/338 Lapua
338 Lapua
375 Lapua
458 Lapua.

Dont ask me why!! (I just want to!!) [Big Grin]

460wby,

Open the boltface with new ring soldered on the bolthead (gets rid of the factory Rem. extractor recess inside it), install Sako or M-16 style extractor... single shot followers in mine, although I may install a center feed box in my 338 version later.

My brother has a 700 in 338/378wby with a 32" Pacnor and a Holland brake hanging on it, it's in a Choate Tactical stock and throated for 300gr SMK's with an OAL of 4.1"... nothin pretty but, it smokes them 300's out of it at 3000 fps just under max load with 118gr H870.

I expext the 338 Lapua Imp to get 3100 fps or more quite easily with the 40" bbl using the 300gr SMK, which it will be throated for.

The 30/338 Lapua Imp should run an easy 3400-3500 with a 180 in the 30" bbl, I do know guys who don't run exreme pressure and do get 3400 in their comparable improved 338 LI cases.

I'll probably have two stocks for my 338 version, one so I can use the bbl bock and the 40" tube, the other stock for a lightweight contoured .475 and 6.5 cal switch bbls too. Should be fun!!

I have some pics of my brothers, if you want email me and I'll send 'em to ya.
