.375 thru .416"?
i bought a 98 mauser in 8x57 that has a shot out barrel(4" to the crown there is no rifling). i'm thinking wildcat!!!!! a wildcat that is .375, .401, .411 or .416" . i'll use it for whitetail(150lbs+) and black bear(300lbs+). it will be a cast boolit rifle and its range will go about 150 yards and less, 50 yards and less is more likely. i'm going to keep the peep sights, but i'll d&t it for a scope. it will only be going 1700-1800fps with 270-350gr boolits. the action will be a 308-like(308, 7x57, 284, 6.5 creedmoor...) case.

i am "thinking"(i really gotta quit doin that homer!!!!!!) that a 375-308 or 375-284 will be it. but.... i'm not quite sure of caliber.

Why don't you have it rechambered/rebored to .444 Marlin? About what you want and brass redilly available.

444 is rimmed and will require many expensive mods
Better to use a 9.3x57, .375x57,411x57
With only a tad more effort- 9.3x62, 375 Hawk or 411Hawk

I agree with the 9.3x57 idea. Easy + inexpensive.

O.K. try this on for size. You were interested in a .375 bullet in an 06 or comparable case, right? Why not go with the original Mannlicher model 1910 in 9.5X57. It is a .375 on a 57 mm case. It was Mannlichers contribution to African hunting in 1910; however, in 1911 Holland came out with the .375 H+H + blew them out of the water. By 375 H+H standards, the 9.5 is rather anemic but perfectly suited for North American game like you described. Besides, you'll be the only one that has one short of anyone owning an original M/S 1910.Just a thought.

Never mistake motion for action.

Addendum; sorry, I was working off a memory: 9.5X56 M/S. As the cigarette commercial in the 60s "Just a silly millimeter longer". Seriously, if you opt on this one I can give you some loading data. I used jacketed + cast my own as well.

I have a 375 wildcat based on the 375 Ruger and shortened to 57mm. I could loan you the reamers, gauges, and forming dies if interested. You can find out information on the 8x57 magnum thread below. I call it the 9.5x57 Mag.

I recently put together a 375/06 Ackley Imp. Very happy with it. I am fireforming cases with 245 gr cast bullet and 12 grs of Red dot. 235 gr Speer bullets shoot real nice groups as do 270 gr Hornady's. 30-06 brass is plentiful and cheap, Redding makes dies and CH4D does as well

I vote 400 Whelen. You can use ‘06 brass, which comes up a little short, or qual-cart makes properly marked cylindrical brass that one only needs to run through a sizer die.

FISH!!

Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984:

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

Iwould tend to rebarrel it to a 257, 7x57, 270 or 30-06 or whatever, that gives you more options than a rebore that limits you to a 9.3x62 IMO..unless you want to go to a larger bore,if so there are a number of options in big bores.

I read about a wildcat for cleaning up 8x57 chambers and it would be worth investigating for your application.

They simply used a 375H&H reamer, but only partially inserted to 57mm. This apparently cleaned up the chamber and ended up the correct diameter at the breech end to continue to use 8x57 cases opened up to 375. The loading dies were simply shortened 375H&H dies.

If that works it would be a pretty inexpensive wildcat.
