I just shipped off a couple of Sako actions to Hart for rebarreling. Their barrels are hand lapped, they square the action and they lap the lugs. One action will be fitted with a 26" barrel in 6mm/284 and the other a 26" barrel in 7RM. Both barrels are Shilen #4 Magnum Sporter contour. Each barreled action will be fitted, glassed and pillar bedded. Any thoughts on the accuarcy potential of these rifles at 300 yds?

I assume you sent your actions to R.W. Hart & Son in Nescopeck, Pa. If so, you can expect excellent workmanship.

Actions were shipped to Hart Rifle Barrels in New York. The stock work will be done by Harry Lawson in Tuscon.

Are the Shilen barrels better than Hart barrels? I know Shilen barrels are fantastic but I have always thought Hart barrels were just a little bit better, but then again that may be what I get for thinking. LOL.

Barrels are like women. They all have potential. Some have more potential than others and you never really know until you try them. I'd say that a barrel from any of the big-kid makers will shoot better than you can - if the smith does his job in fitting it and mating the barrel, action, and stock.

Hey Roger, you're gonna get me in trouble. I never even thought about any ladies might be reading this. But I'm just a harmless old man. That's one advantage to getting old. The young ladies know I'm harmless so I can flirt without getting slapped and my wife thinks it's funny.

And I meant that you won't know if a BARREL has potential until you try it. That's my story and I'm sticking with it. Roll Eyes

I still don't undersdtand the comment about Hart barrels being handlapped, and then telling us they were Shilen barrels. Shilen barrels are handlapped also. I don't know if I would have been bold enough to send 2 Shilen barrels to Hart for fitting and chambering. Why not get Shilen to do the work? Why not use Hart barrels?

When ordering a barrel from Hart Rifle Barrels, you must specify the particular contour. This contour could be a factory Remington, a Winchester, a Sako, or whatever. You can also specify a Douglas contour, a Shilen contour or whatever. My choice, for no logical reason other than one must make a choice of something, is the Shilen Magnum Sporter contour. Hart Rifle Barrels will turn one of their own barrels to this contour of Shilen's.

I had a wildcat 6mm Ron Smith gaintwist barrel on a factory Sako action and stock that shot 1.5" at 300 yds. Back then, I was suitably impressed by that level of accuracy but, now, with the hand lapped Hart barrel, squared action and lapped lugs, I was anticipating smaller groups than 1.5" at 300 yds. With the 7RM 1.5" groups at 300 yds is more than tight enough as it will be strictly used for big game. However, the 6/284 will wear a 6x24 Elite 4200 and will be used mostly on coyotes at long range therefore I'm hoping for 1.0" groups or less at 300 yds. The 6/284 has a Canjar set trigger as well. Are my expectations in line with reality?

Hart barrels have an excellent reputation for accuracy. Just bear in mind caliber selection has some bearing on the accuracy and it would be unfair to expect benchrest size groups from rifles built for hunting. I would expect both rifles to easily be sub moa rifles with the proper bullets and loads.
