Thinking of building a 6.5 STW but am looking for feedback on other options. I wonder if a regular 264 WIN or 270 WBY is a better option. My desire is to get a 130 or 140 grain bullet to provide best long range performance in a rifle that will have less recoil than the over bore .284 & .308 offerings. Thoughts?

We're going to be "gifted" with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don't, Which purportedly covers at least ten million more people, without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that didn't read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a President, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, for which we'll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke!!!!! I'd be for taking a hard look at a 270 and having it tubed with a 25 or 26" tube. You'll get some very flashy speeds and it'll do most all you're looking for.

Just a thought.

Or do the same thing with a 6.5/06.

Just a thought or two for you.

I love the 6.5 STW but you must have a 28" barrrel adn 30" is even better. I haven't shot mine too much yet but it is accurate with all 4 loads I put thru it and it is flat and fast. I'm also from the school that the 6.5 kills better than it should on paper. Don't know why but it just does.

If you like std chambers then go with a 270 if you like to be a bit different the 6.5 is a great case and a lot of fun to shoot. I will be putting it thru it's paces next spring at a few dog towns. I have no doubt that it will be taking rats at 1000 yds and better.

Fritz,
I am in your camp with the 6.5...I am almost sure that is the path that I will take. Problem is that I have little experience with the .264 Win or the 6.5 STW. This gun will have a 28" tube. Is there any practical reason to use the STW case? How much extra velocity will I get over the Win case?

With a 28" barrel you'll get suprisingly good velocities with the 264 Win Mag but not the same as the STW. You might get a little better feeding with less work; cases are pretty easy to aquire/make for either.

I'd lean toward the 264 for big game because of magazine length/feeding issues or the STW for bench/varmint like Fritz is doing for that last bit of trajectory. After all, it's basically the 6.5-300 Wby which has been a popular 1000 yd Benchrest round for decades.

I haven't loaded for the 6.5 STW but 4000 fps is not hard to break in a long-barrel 264 WM with the 95-100 gr varmint bullets.

I think that the majority of the serious long range shooters not shooting the various 300 and 338's are shooting either the 6.5-284 or the newer 6mm's (Dashers, etc.)

I think if you look up overbore in the dictionary it shows a picture of the 257 Weatherby and the 264 Win mag. roflmao

The other two 6.5 to throw into the ring would be a 6.5 Mashburn and a 6.5 RUM The latter is one that has perked my interest from time to time.

But if I had to choose I'd be for thinking long and hard about the 6.5/Wby or STW.

Good luck sounds like a fun project. What are your intentions for it?

The biggest reason for the 6.5 stw is how easy brass is to locate. you can usually pick up once fired 7STW at the range and that cost's you nothing.

Some day I will build a 6.5-284 just because I love the 6.5 caliber but for now I'm completely happy with the STW.

I wouldn't hesitate to take an elk at a broad side shot with hte 6.5 stw and deer, goats, sheep , and antelope are all gonners if I like what I see thru the scope. Cyotes usually think they are safe after 500 yds or so. with the 6.5stw they guessed wrong and shooting p dogs will be a hoot with some very explosive kills at unreal ranges.

Enjoy whatever you decide.

I deer hunted with a guy who shot a nice custom rifle in 6.5 Ultra Mag. When I shook the case you could hear that it was not full of powder. I was sitting next to him when he shot his deer and must say it planted the buck at just shy of 500 yards....the case also blew the primer and was very hard to extract. Based on that rifle I believe the ultra mag case may be a little large for a 6.5 bullet. The STW may be about a high as I would want to go...just not sure if it is going to serve me any better than the 264 Win.
