Got sidetracked on my project, but I am getting back to business again. Several years ago I put together a rifle on a Rem 700 short action. Using a 30" Lilja 1 1/4 stainless barrel (1:8) twist I had a 'smith from Plains MT chamber the barrel w/ a tight neck. I didn't specify throat depth(my mistake) and he cut the throat so deep I couldn't even come close to the lands of the rifling. After shooting a hundred rounds or so through it, I wasn't satisfied w/ the accuracy. Everything I've ever read about vld bullets says they need to be close to if not into the lands to shoot the best. I sent the barreled action back to the guy and asked him to rechamber using my "dummy" round I sent him. After getting it back I lost interest as I was working out of town and had little time to dink w/ it. So far I've tried rl 22 and h4831(very little). Velocity was pretty good-around 3500 fps w/ the 107 Sierra moly MK's. This was w/ the deep throat. I haven't shot it yet / the new chamber. I'm using Norma 6.5x284 brass necked down and trimmed . .002 diference between loaded round and actual chamber neck dimension .268 I was really hoping for sub 1/2 moa out to 500 yards. any further help would be appreciated

You might want to give Sierra a call to confirm what is the best velocity with that bullet. I think your alittle on the hot side. You may want to check on http://www.benchrest.com 1000 yd forum also.

Initial load development revealed its weakness. While experiencing slight difficulty lifting the bolt after a shot, the bullet fragmented into a thousand tiny shards right at 3600 fps. This was w/ 57 gr rl22.
Yes, I've reduced it to 55.5, i think. It's been several yeares since I've shot it and have recently got the "bug" again to try and shoot LR with it. I had the "smith put a muzzzle brake on it and have poured molten lead into the hollow HS Precision stock. I'd guess its weight w/ the Mark IV rings and the Nightforce 12-42x scope to be around 20 pounds. It doesn't move very much when I shoot it. I built it for the 1000 yard club in Varmint Hunter magazine.

An excellent round - I got my best accuracy after a custom recrowning job on a Douglas 26" Premium Grade barrel using 53.5 grains of H4831 with the Sierra 100-grain PSPBT bullet. Mine shot a number of groups of close to the size of this 5-shot string at 100 yards AFTER the recrowning job.

Before recrowning, it was much less accurate. My chamber is throated for the Speer 105-grain spitzer seated with the bullet base flush with the base of the case neck. 1/10" twist.

The MV of this load from my barrel is 3440 FPS.......
