I am thinking of having a big .358 made, anyone have experience or thoughts? Don't need it just running out of calabers that go fast and love the 35. Have a 375 RUM and keep thinking of the 375/35 RUM as a great 35. Optik

I really like the 358 STA. It will do everything the RUM will do with a tad bit less muzzle blast and recoil. Cost will be about the same but finding brass might be the bigger issue. I dont know how long the 375 RUM will last, in which case you would have to neck up a 300. IMHO a 338/358 would be the better option.

Roll EyesMy .358 x.404 IMP only gets out about once a year now. Just a little too much to handle from the bench. Puts a 250 grain bullet out the barrel at a little over 3100 FPS. Built as a single shot on a 98 action. beer roger

The STW is an easier choice. 375 H&H brass is comparatively cheap, and readily available. An easy pass and fireforming turns it into my G&H 358. If I were going to do a 358 Towsley (RUM by editor at the Rifleman) I would make sure I bought at least 200 375 RUM cases at the same time.

Let me sell you a 358 STA. I have a model 70 in this caliber. I'll sell it cheaper than you can build one. PM me if you want to know more about it.

I certainly like the 35 cal and a 35 RUM would be the ultimate. I agree with thecanadian that the 338 RUM case would be the best to use.

How about a 358 norma, easy to make brass out of either 300 win or 338 win.

At one time I loved the 35's... Special affection for two very special M70s from the Custom Shop in 358 STA, one used extensively in my earlier years with great success.... Later I built a big 358 Ultra, and it is a big 35.....

Imagine the fps of a 35 RUM.

I have a good bit of load data, I run 280s at 2875 fps, 250s at 3000 fps, 225s to 3175 fps, and played with the 175 Raptors to 3400 fps. Rifle is a 24 inch Winchester M70....

Today those guns are just too big and too long to go to the field, so they are delegated to be rack rifles and test guns when I need to shoot that caliber for some reason....

Either 358 STA or 358 Ultra will do what is needed in 35 caliber....

Michael

I have a 35 RUM shoots Nosler 200 grain Partitions less The MOA at 3000 Fps. With a muzzle break recoils not bad, but is very loud.

I think it is based on the 338 RUM, which is only 2.65" in length, .200" shorter than the rest. It would be easier to do on a standard magnum action.

What powder do you use with the 225 BT's and what fps do you get? I plan on using the BT's for medium to long range white tail. Thanks, Optik

No experience with BT's but extensive use of Sierra 225 grainers. 90 to 92 grains of RL-22 with speeds of 2900 to 2950 fps. My two STA's shoot them with great accuracy. I use them fireforming unfired new cases because I get max accuracy with once fired cases. I hunt with Northforks. Good luck and good shooting
