Could anyone steer me to loading data and cartridge info ( col , best twist, etc ) for this combonation. I am looking to add this to the 6.5-284 and .284 family I already use. I have a .308 that is a dream to shoot and would like to improve on its preformance level for hunting without having to increase recoil much.

I think there is an article on this in Wolfe's Wildcats book. COL would be whatever will fit in your rifle magazine, assuming you use one. If it's a single shot, I would throat it so that the heaviest bullet I would use will fit with the base of the bullet level with the bottom of the case neck. Basically, this is a 30-06 in terms of capacity, so start with -06 starting loads and work up. As for twist, whichever bullet you want to use will help you decide on that, but it's hard to go wrong with 1-10. - Danu

The 30-284 is remarkably close to the 7.5x55 Swiss. I just made up a 30-284 for another shooter. No performance reports as yet. Regards, Bill.

As for twist, it depends on the bullet weight you wish to use. If you have a magazine lenth that allows you to seat heavier bullets I would go with a 1-10, which will allow you to shoot 180grn to 220grn bullets. If you have a shorter magazine (Remington 700) than I would suggest you use bullets in the 150grn to 170grn range and go with the 1 in 12 twist.

It IS very similar to an '06 in case capacity. Having said that, I worked up loads for my three of them (2 are called 7.5 Swiss on the barrel, third one is in a Win M88 with the ".308 Win" XX-ed out and re-marked ".30-284").

Based on that small experience, I would not start with .30-06 and work up. I would start with the standard approach of any cartridge using data from another similar one...i.e., reduce the comparable (.30-06) data 10%, THEN work up from there.

You may find it does not like to be loaded any hotter than the '06 does...or that it may not accept '06 loads...or that it will take hotter than '06 loads.

It only takes the loss of sight in one eye from a primer leak to lose all the shooting time gained by skipping the "start low" part.

Best wishes,

AC
