Hey guys,

I am in the process of figuring out the load my stepfather used in his 35whelen ai before giving it to me. he was getting 2800fps out of the 26" barrel with 4064, 225g Sierra GK. I tried 54 grains and got 2662. I don't have any manuals that have guidelines even for the standard 35 whelen with 225g bullet, so don't know powders and ranges to start with.

Any help appreciated. I would ilke to get it back to about 2800fps if possible (should be since he did it before and it has that nice longish barrel). If I can get it worked out in time I am going to use it on a pig hunt in July.

When I had a whelen ackley I simply used standard whelen data, and worked up to at most 2 grains over max loads for the standard whelen chamber. 225 gr @ 2800 sounds reasonable, I'd expect 61-62 grs of Varget of RL-15 to be in the ball park, but work up to that level carefully!

My 35 Ackley Improved Whelen is a Mannlicher stocked brush gun with a 19" barrel. The following loads are maximum in my rifle.

F210 primer R-P cases OAL 3.300"

225gr Sierra SPBT 61gr H4895 2720 fps

225gr Nosler Partition 60gr H4895 2710fps

Starting 5% under and working up I think you should have no problem getting 2800fps in a 26" barrel

Good luck
