I have a 26" 1 in 10" twist barrel on an FN Mauser '98 action. It is currently chambered for a tight neck 6mm250.

I have settled on the 85 grain Nolser partition in my 6mm Rem AI. I used it on 3 small white tail deer last year, each was a one-shot kill at about 150-200 yards.

never really cared much for the 6./.243(what-ever you want to call it) sized stuff on deer size game, most people try to over-extend the range capabilities of the cartridge with heavier bullets for deer size stuff, then they think more case volume is the answer, but that little bore just won't handle it no matter how long the tube is...... that said... you won't see a whole lot of gain by going to bigger brass with that little hole up front. maybe an AI 6mm. remington, but that's about as much capacity as that little bore can handle without just adding to the global warming problem (if you know what i mean). why not just improve the .250(?).... it'll show a little better with the heavier bullets and do just about as good as bigger brass stuffed with charcoal with that longer tube.

the one you have should do fine for those animals. a 223 should do fine on them.

I think 6mmRem AI but only because I'm not sure the greater body taper of the unimproved 6mmRem will clean out the 6mm-250 shoulders The 6mmRem is just about ideal for a mauser action as the action is more or less designed for the 7x57 and 8x57, so a 6x57 really isn't much of a difference... Isn't your 6mm-250 what they called the 6mm International. According to my Speer loading manual the the shoulder is wider on the 6mm Rem and further out. The one you have the wall diameter at the shoulder is about .418. The 6mm Rem is .429 so it should clean up easy. Am I thinking of something different?

The cartridge you have would be fine with me. If you do rechamber and have a set of 6mm/250 dies to sell let me know.

6mm AI! Mine with a 26" barrel shoots 95 grain bullets at 3400 fps below max. Impressive cartridge. Love shooting precision and long range. Big bores too! Recent college grad, started a company called MK Machining where I'm developing a bullpup rifle chassis system.

For my $$ the 6-06, 6mmGibbs, 240Wby are all so overbore that you burn a heck of a lot of powder & barrel for a very small gain. My vote was for the 6mmAI a VERY close second would be the 6mm. The basic 6mm loaded to the same pressure gives up very little to the AI. I prefer to be different and I like the looks of the 6mmAI case. You would probably need to put a spacer in the back of the mag box and use a shorter follower for a 243 in a M98. Here is some info and links to some of the 6mms. http://www.angelfire.com/sd/6mmackley/ As usual just my $.02 Paul K

My gunsmith buddy, now retired, was a slobbering fool over the 6mm/284. It has all the "improvements" of the last 100 years. Short powder column, sharp shoulder, etc. I finally found a discount barrel (Douglas XXX!) and built one, but barrel life it don't offer. 6mm/250 ruled the target butts for a time. If you are the least allergic to recoil, stay there. If you want the "latest boomer"??? 6mm.284. If you want the proven classic, 6mm Remington, a necked down .257 Roberts going back along way. Yes, 6mm AI is an improvement. Worth it? Not if you are trying to sell the rifle or want factory ammo. Your call. Luck.

I'm more than a bit of a fan of the 6/06, been using one for quite some time and am on my second barrel now. For me, easy choice and it'd be the 6/06. Good luck in your decision Mark D

I'd keep it simple and try the 6mm06. Overbore? Short barrel life? Hey, this is the WILDcat forum.

Mark what kind of velocities are you getting? Love shooting precision and long range. Big bores too! Recent college grad, started a company called MK Machining where I'm developing a bullpup rifle chassis system.

I shoot a 240 Gibbs. Good wildcat, mine is quite accurate, and one hell of a long range pronghorn/deer rifle. - dan "Intellectual truth is eternally one: moral or sentimental truth is a geographic and chronological accident that varies with the individual" R.F. Burton

with a 6mm. bore, i can't imagine needing any more case volume than a 57mm ackley case would provide on a 26" tube........ anything larger and longer IMHO, are just fire belching charcoal burners even with a longer barrel.
