I know this exists, but wondered if anyone has load and velocity data. Its pretty interesting as the 260 Remington put up very impressive ballistics and is really the same thing only .007 inches bigger. The lighter varmint bullets in .257 should do vry well, and Speer has become very serious ablut making tough 100 and 115 gr .257s.

Do a search on the 25 Souper, that's the common name for this wildcat. - Dan

I think that the reason this is not very popular, is it very close to the 257 Roberts in a short action. Why not just go with a standard cartridge? capt david

Go to my web page and check out the 257DGR, it will tell you what you want to know. It is a much better choice in a Rem SA that a 257 Roberts, due to magazine box retrictions.

this SHOULD have been THE quarterbore round...

the 308 is a 60,000 psi round, and the 257 factory loads are loaded to LOW 40,000 psi, a factory 1/4bore, in a short action at higher pressure would "win" velocity and short quick actions hands down.

the PROOF of this is the 708 rem vs the 7x57... in the US, I can list the makers, curently, of 7x57 on one hand... i can't list the numbers MODELS of any single rifle maker on both hands... remington has something like 14 different 708..

the "only" differences from a 7x57?
1: higher pressure
2: shorter case

You'll probably find it to be a short action 25-06, probably a better size case for the bore to boot. I agree with Jeffe, it SHOULD have been THE 1/4 bore.

I hope representatives of all the bullet/ammo manufacturers are reading this, and will now run off in a tizzy to domesticate this cartridge. While they are at it one can only hope they will give us a chance to shoot some very high quality 140 gr. bullets from my new Winchester Semi Short Souper Magnum(WSSSM) with the 8" twist. Ah, I can see the vortex as I write.....

I speculate that folks out west faced with misguided bureaucratic interference regarding the reintroduction of apex predators in their back yards will fall passionately in love with the cartridge, and warmly nickname it the S.S.S. Mag.

I am definitely with you on the twist rate. Just by going to a 1 in 9 rate we could get up to 140 grain bullets stabilized. That yeilds a sectional density of .303 without getting too fast for the 75 grainers. Could we not swage the current .264 140s down to .257?

Velocity in the 25-08 would be about the same as the 260, minus only 25 fps for the loss in bore diameter. This would be a better all around round than the 260, and that is no small feat.

My sentiments exactly. I agree there should have been a 25 Souper as "THE" 1/4 bore round. I recently sold mine of many years and am going through withdrawals and going to build another. There really is no life without a 25 Souper! It just sorta jumps out of the locker and into the truck. My little 250/3000 AI is [almost] there but not quite. Life without a 25 Souper is almost like no sex! Think I`ll nickname the new Souper Viagra II !!!

Aloha, Mark
