Does anyone have any comments on the 35/284. I have a steel BLR I am restoring, and a little more "juice" over the 358Win would be nice.

Any suggestions on where to loan/rent a reamer? TIA, Dutch.

I know a guy up here who has one, I believe his performance is midway between the 358 win and 35 whelen.

A smith that has a 284 reamer can cut the body/shoulder and go back with a seperate necker/throater as a way to cut the chamber without having a specialized reamer made.

You should be able to duplicate or nearly duplicate a 35 whelen in a short action, unless you have to seat your bullets very deep to fit in the magazine box.

I have a 35-284 on a Ruger short action. I give up alot to the 35 Whelen with long bullets. For the 200gr. rem bullets and most pistol bullets it works real neat.Mine weighs about 6 1/2 lb. 20" barrel and is good for the thick bush in NE Sask. I use the 200gr.rn. bullets. Shots are under 50 yd. in the bush. One may get a 200 yd. shot down a cutline but mostly quick shots in the bush.Mark

I had a 35-284 built on a Savage 99CD action. It was OK, but I decided that I liked the 338-284 better, as the 210 grain BT and Partition shoot to the same approximate POA and they fit the magazine better.

I don't think that there is enough gain to be worth the cost involved with a rechamber job and expensive dies, but it just my opinion.

After having done a few 284 based wildcats, I like the 6-284, 25-284, 6.5-284, and 338-284. The 30-284, 35-284, and 375-284 didn't work as well as I'd hoped.

I may be the fellow Paul was referring to...I have a .35/.284 in a Savage 99F. I have trouble getting much over 2400 fps with the Speer 250 HotCor. I think it is due to the "rear locking" action of the 99. Case stretching becomes a problem and causes poor extraction above 2400 fps.

But pushing a 250 at 2400 is acceptable with this rifle. I like it for quick fast shooting. Whenever I need more power I can use my .35 Whelen Impr Model 70, or move up to my .35/.300 WSM Montana Rifleman (250's at 2700 fps). (Yes, I do like .35's.)

260Remguy: I dont have any experience with it, but I have heard that the 30-284, are on of the more succsessfull(sp) wildcats based on the 284 case..

Thanks guys. Sounds like not enough improvement over the 358Win to worry about. I think I'm going to trade in both my BLR's on something to turn into a 35WSM.

I, too, do like 35's..... Dutch.

I have a model 700 short action and was toying around with a 284 based wildcat. I am interested in the 338 or the 6.5. I have a 35 Whelan Imp and a 30-06AI so I need to have something in .338. My other cartridge choice is the twenty tactical. Lots of decisions to make.

I built a .338-284 on a Savage 99 about 20yrs ago. It worked really well with the 210 partition. Doug Wells at Lock Stock & Barrel in Huson, MT has a reamer for that cartridge.

You just gotta like what it will do, then you'll like it. (I'm a genius, I know.
Roger B has a short 358W or a short 358-308 however you like, and it puts a 290g cast load out at over 2200 fps from a little 22" bbl milsurp Mauser. I love the thing and I haven't even seen it.
If you're looking for more power, get more powder. But a 358-284 woudl do it's job quite well. Just don't ask it to do Whelen's job!
Now, a 358-9.3x64mm would be da bomb!
