Ok, I have a short Remington action with a .standard bolt face and a matching H-S precision stock that I like. If any of you folks found yourself in this position and wanted something that nobody else in camp has, what would you build. Some ideas that I have had are .270 Redding, .250 Ackley, and .338-08. The purpose of the gun doesn't really matter to me...I'll find something to hunt with it once its built.

Well, pick your favorite caliber and neck a 308 to it! How about a 22-08? A little more powder than a 22-250 Ackley, but a 26" heavy barrel on it maybe?
If you're up for some experimenting, maybe a 416-08 throated for cast loads. That would be fun to me. 300g FN's seated just as long as the rifle would feed. Throw in an extra $50 and have a custom mould cut for it. I'd bet $5 you could get 2200 from a 22" bbl. And I'd bet $6 no one else in camp would have one!

How about taking a 444 Marlin, turning the rim down to 473, which would make it practically rimless, then shorten it and neck it down to like 416 or 375 with a straight walll and a sharp shoulder.

It would be like a 416 Taylor Improved only on a standard case.

6.5 x 55 BJAI or just a plain-old 284 Win. For reasons I can't comprehend there aren't very many plain-old 284 Wins out there.

I think the .270/08 has potential. If the bolt face could be opened up a 6.5mm WSM would be a screamer. Another possibility would be the 9.3 WSM (9.3X64 balistics in an easy to obtain case). Nobody would have these.

I second the 8mm-.284 as a very cool round and a sleeper. The parent 284 is a fine round, constrained only by the deep seating of the heavier 7mm bullets. The 8mms are much shorter for their weight, but still deliver good sectional densities and BCs. A 250 grainer might be a bit long, but the 220s are not and you want them to be semi pointed or RNs anyway. The 125s are thin and make excellent varmint bullets. We are talking 3400 foot-pounds at the muzzle and SDs that exceed .300 so this is no pop gun. Expansion ratio is md way between the 308 and the '06 so many powders will work well and cover the range of bullet weights and velocities well. Dense ball powders like 748 and 760 will burn cool and use all of the space availabe.

Necking up 1mm will not stress the 284 case at the shoulder, so you won't have to throw any away.

If you choose to open up the bolt face you can also use the 450 marlin and seat them out to 2.80 inches for 8 additional grs of capacity. Wit a 22 inch bbl, and AA2230, you will be well over 4000 FPE and into 375 H&H territory with 350 gr Speers.
