I have the opportunity to get an early Rem 40X (27 1/2" bbl)in 222mag for a pretty good price (@US$350)...well I assume thats a good price. Overall it is in very good condition.
I have a very accurate 222rem in a Rem 700 Varmint (trued action etc) which satisfies my desires for something accurate in the low speed 22 CF range.
What can you suggest in a wildcat on this action. Although not strictly speaking a wildcat I though 22BR or 22PPC mainly cause I don't know whether the bolt face can be opened out to a 22 SA RUM or WSSM. Other thing is cases for the WSSM are still not available here in Australia and unsure on reamers.
maybe I shoudl just leave the 40X alone..they aren't collectable are they?
Why don't you see how it shoots first? You may have good trading material there.
If the overall condition of the rifle is good it may be worth $500 or more. But to throw away a potentially good barrel, bolt and assembly work is a waste in some ways.
The other crossover decision point is if I want to do that work myself. Since I don't want to then I don't want the project in the first place.

Yes its called the 22 Cheetah.. 308br necked down to 22.. 52 grainers @ 4200fps.. Can you say barrel burner lolol...
or 22-243, which is the standard 308 with larger rifle primer. The 243 is the 308 necked to 6mm, so the 22-243 is the 22-308 for all intensive purposes. I love mine, quick twist barrel and 80grn Sierras all the way.

What purpose do you want your M40XB to serve? I'd consider a .221 Fireball with a 1-12 bbl, or possibly the new Ruger .204 with a slightly tighter twist than adverised. This is so you can shoot bullets longer than 32-33 grains, that are bound to become available.
Aside from being shorter than the mag-well, a .221 as well as a .204 should fit just fine into hat action. FWIW.

Hux, If the barrel is in good shape, leave it alone. I had one several years ago that was a tack driver and not too far behind the 22/250 velocity wise. Stepchild

6x47 would be a good choice, accurate, easy to load and leaves your bolt face original. Again, I'd offer to shoot the 222RM and see if it shoots..if it does I'd leave it alone unless you need this action for something else.
