My favorite rifle is a pre '64 model 70 in 416 Taylor. It was built before the 416 Rem. came out. They guy I bought it from used it as his heavy rifle on safari in 1991. Killed a cape bullalo and an elephant with no problems. The rifle shoots very well. The loads he took to Africa were 70 grs of 4320 with Hornady soft points @ 2330 fps, trophy bonded bear claws @ 2349 fps and monolithic solids @ 2380 fps (he thought they were all going 2400fps). He was very satisfied with the rifle. Personally, I can account for two 100-150lb white-tails using his hornady loads. Both were 1/4ing shots and went clean through. No follow up shots were required ! I went on a Canadian spring bear hunt this past spring and took this rifle loaded with 350gr XLC coated X bullets loaded by Safari Arms (he got them to me in about 6 days, I wasn't sure Canada would let me take hand loads accross the border so I order the factory stuff to be safe at the last minute). They average 2508 fps and shoot 1" groups in my rifle. Love the rifle. Ammo isn't a problem.

I just plain don't like 416 Remington, not a big Remington fan so that kind of turns me off. Seriously, the Taylor is an "interesting" round, and I would think in some actions easier to make work than others. I have dropped a dummy round through the opening of a springfield and it barely goes through, I would think an extra 1/4" would require more. I have never hunted africa and haven't tested the two rounds so don't know how much more the Remington does. Frankly the reason I am having one built is it is for my stepfather and he has been anomored with the Taylor since its inception, which was before the Remington, and how many people do you know with a 416 Taylor on a springfield? Personally I would buy a CZ in 416 Rigby if I wanted a 416. I don't since i have a Lott waiting to be finished and then need to decide on whether to use my Argentine for a 404 jeff or a 10.75 of some sort. then of course there is the issue of winning the lottery to pay for these lofty ideas. I have a taylor built on a Ruger stainless MKII action with a 25 in douglas barrel. I get 2400 plus with IMR 4064 and 350 gr bullets Over 2600 with 300 gr bullets. I am sure a 3asy 2300 with 400 gr bullets. It was fun buildng easy to make brass and load for. Mine shoots all weight of bullet to the same point of aim. Yes you could have a 416 rem do every thing the taylor does. But I could not have it on a ruger stainless MKII action. So I built a taylor OH well I guess I well just have to suffer with it.

I had a 416 taylor built on a ruger mk11 action years ago,it would do 2350fps with a 400gr hornady and 74grs imr4320,it also shot the 350gr speer well at 2500fps with 77grs 4320,I never should have sold that rifle,it makes a great moose/bear rifle. If your travelling to hunt the 416 rem makes more sense but for a stay at home big bore for big north american game the tayor rocks

Why couldn't you build a 416 Remington on a Mk11, isn't is a 06 length action? all my 416 Rem. and 404 have been built on a Mauser 98 action and one on a pre 64 M-70... For African hunting I see no need for a wildcat, to much money at stake to ruin a hunt with no ammo...or to have to use someone elses rifle... I have used the 404, 416 Rem, and a host of others including the neat little 10.75x68, and the new gun I am presently building is a 416 Remington on a Sako FN Mauser action...Why?, easy to build, plenty of rounds in the magazine, ammo and components are cheap and easily available, and it has proven itself to me in Africa, its not a wildcat and no wildcat is as good or better and if I lose ammo or get seperated from my ammo anyplace in the world, I can find a box of 416 Rem someplace......

You could build a 416 rem on a ruger mk11 but it would take alot of work as the action is only set up for 3.34" cartridge length not the 3.6" needed for the rem.You would need to do alot of machining work ,where the 416 taylor is a simple barrel job. I like both cartridges, but have always liked wsomething alittle different and since i don't have to travel far to hunt.

Yep I just had the 416 barrel put on and chamber. No feed work or other needed. If Ruger would make a stainless action already for the 375 length casings I would have gone with 416 rem..
