I would like any data and information you have on this caliber. What kind of velocity you are getting with the heavier 140-142 grain bullets. What twist rates you are using. Also if you are having to turn necks on cases. Which brass you are using. I just built a test rifle in this caliber and it seems very finicky. I chambered it with a 6.5X300 WSM reamer but neck is way too tight for 300 WSM brass necked down. 270 WSM brass is thinner and will try it next. So far it seems to be taking 10 grains less powder to reach max than my 270 WSMs. My gun has a 1-9 twist and a 26 inch barrel.

That seems a little high based on caliber difference only. However looking at the manuals the differences between the 264wmag and 270Wby & 7Remmag are in the 6-8gr range using same weight bullet. So I guess, tight neck tigher bore etc might make up the 3gr additional difference.

As usual just my $.02

Tight neck diffently the main problem and that was solved by using 270 WSM brass instead of 300 WSM brass. My reamer certainly wasn't meant for 300 WSM brass even though thats what it was supposed to be.

Sam,
My partner and I have both 6.5 WSMs and .338 WSMs, just like Michael458. What we have done, probably using the same chambering reamer brand as you, is use .270 WSM and .325 WSM brass to make our two wildcats. As you have found out, that solves the tight neck problem. I will dig into my reloading data and email you what I have. Unfortunately, have not used 140gr bullets...yet.

Max,

Thanks, Michael458 gave me all his data but he didn't do a lot with 140's either. Some of the loads on other sites are pipe dreams are far as velocity goes. I just what to know what most people are getting out of this round. I have built quite a few 6.5 guns and thought this round was very interesting.

I don't know why you are worrying over a 140 gr bullet anyway! Just use the 120s and forget about it. If you got 140s to shoot up, just load them up to 3000 or so and blast. Of course, don't forget, the 6.5 WSM is the only rifle I actually have blown up! So not so sure you should take my advice on this one?

Michael,

I wanted the 142 grain to shoot LONG range, oops I'm sorry I know 50 yards is long range for you. HEE HEE I do have a bunch of 130 grain bullets so I might meet you in the middle.

I'm shooting the 140 bergers at 3250fps out of my 6.5 WSM...

It's got a 27"bbl, though.

I'll take a look at the data when I get home and post a f/u with the exact charge/powder.

Worked good on whitetails at 400 yards and 550 yards last year, although the berger was a little more frangible that I would have liked even at those distances.

I have a 1-8T 28 inch long kreiger barrel on my 6.5 WSM. After I chambered it I ran a throating reamer to set the base of the boat tail even with the bottom of the neck when loaded to the lands. I am pushing 140 bergers at very near 3300fps with VV560. It has been very accurate out to the furthest distance tested of 1150 yards.

What platform do you have it built on?
