At my request, Mr. Zeglin sent me the limited set of performance data on his .416 Aagaard wildcat, which is the .376 Steyr improved and necked up. All tests were done with a 21" barrel (the wildcat and gun were built to a customer's specifications).

With 350-grain Speer Mag-Tips loaded to an OAL of 3.1", he got just over 2300 fps with 65 grains of H4895. A three-round string had a standard deviation of 7.8 and an extreme spread of 11 fps.

With 400-grain Hawk bullets loaded to an OAL of 3.175", he got 2160 fps with 64 grains of RL15. A three-round string had a standard deviation of 4.9 and an extreme spread of 7 fps.

Looks to be a .404 Jeffery equivalent in a more efficient cartridge that fits a standard length action and probably generates less recoil, if the difference between the .376 Steyr and the .375 H&H is any indication. Very interesting...

What's the difference in pressures, with same bullet weight/speed?
All the 'cats in their line look interesting to me, especially the 338.
Now, I just can't understand Steyr's decision on case length. Won't fit in a short action, wasted room in a standard length. I think the "original" Brenneke dimensions would've made a fine .375-bore indeed.
Come to think of it, what a fine case that is.
Right in between the .375 Whelen Imp and H&H.
Water capacities: 98 114 132 -grains.
Someone needs to start mass-producing those cases to give wildcatters something to chew on!
I wonder how the Steyr compares to the .375 Wh-Imp. Seems like about the same amount of powder room, just a bit shorter/fatter.

Mr. Zeglin didn't supply pressure data. As for Steyr's decision on case length, it was driven by the dimensions of the Steyr Scout's magazine, since the cartridge was intended to match or improve upon Jeff Cooper's "Super Scout" concept in ".360 Magnum" (a long-loaded .350 Rem Mag that achieved 2600 fps with a 250-grain Swift A-Frame from Cooper's 19" "Lion Scout"). Steyr already had the .308 Steyr Scout and didn't want to change dimensions for the medium caliber version.

Slingster,

just for fun, I ran the 416 Z thru quickload and got 58,000 psi for the 350g bullet and 51,000 psi for the 400g Hawk with about 10% less recoil than an equivalent 404 J. And loading density almost 100% for the Hawk.

actually, the 376 fits PERFECTLY into a short action, that being defined as a rifle that was designed to shoot 7x57.

It's right at 3.100 with anything (except 300s) right on the crimp line.

I bult mine on a mexican 36 mauser... with nothing but a little ramp work and a touch to the sides...
