I just acquired an old Springfield rifle that had been rebarreled to 22-250 many years ago. My friend and I learned to handload with the rifle and experimented with vaporizing hornet bullets and generally loaded it as hot as we dared for years. The rifle is still a slick-handling thing but it's shooting a pattern now. I don't really want to rebarrel, I'd rathur rebore it, but I don't need a 250 Savage, I'd like to use the 55-70 grain bullets in .243 in it as a heavy varmint rifle. Has anybody done this before and what kind of performance could I expect to get compared with a 243?

Chop901, Why would you rather re-bore instead of re-barrel? You will not save anything on a re-bore. Re-barrel and chamber it for whatever moves your fun meter. If I wanted a 6mm for varminting I would go with a 6BR or a 6mm dasher. I use a .243 Ackley Improved right now and it is also impressive. Jim 99% of the democrats give the rest a bad name. Chop, The 6mm/250 is somewhat popular as a target cartridge. Many of these target guns have a quick twist for longer range shooting. Keep in mind that this is a wildcat. It should shoot the lighter bullets quite fast but so will a starter load in the 243 Win. Join the NRA

I thought of reboring because that way, I'd leave it looking the same as it was when I first saw it. I realize that I won't save any money but it would be nice to pretend that neither the rifle nor I have changed in the last 40 years.

A second vote to consider the 6/250. Just the normal 22/250 case necked up to 6mm. Shoulder stays in the same place and at the same angle. Redding makes dies. My wife is shooting one, and it pushes the 70 gr Matchking at 3400 fps. Very nice round.

I just read that the 6mm X Tubbs is about to get factory status whatever that means. "Just read that Tubb's 6XC is going to become a legitimized factory round! Get in line, Gentlemen!--2MG" http://www.predatormastersforums.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=52123599&page=1&fpart=2&vc=1 Join the NRA

I believe this cartridge lives in some guise, and is called the 6mm International...... "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."

Your Springfield will have the magazine length to use almost any .243" cartridge out there. You can go standard 243, 6mm Rem, 6-284, 6mm-06, or the ones the other guys mentioned. As well as the AI versions of some of them.
