I know that the Finnish 9,3x54r is actually the same round but what I am wondering is since the Mosins are very strong actions what type of velocities could be achieved with a 286 grain bullet in a 9,3x54r loaded to say 62,000 psi and a COAL of say 3.0 inches. Anybody done this? Is this something quick load or other programs are capable of calculating? Case capacity would be 63.5 grains of water top of the case mouth. Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Have talked to DPCD already, but don't want to bother him with velocity calculation questions. Am really most interested in what calcs something like quick load can produced. Got one on the bench right now; a Remington 91 with an Oberndorf contour 25 inch barrel, Oberndorf bolt handle, NECG barrel sights. 9.3x54R. I got it to feed like snot on a doorknob by milling out the receiver and mag box. Just do a quick load thing and you will get the data you want. I don't have it.... And realize that the magazine is very long so you can seat bullets way out; not at the crimp groove. I can give you the OAL but not at this moment.

It is not a wild cat; it is, or was, standard in Finland for moose and CH4D makes dies. I make the expander plugs to form brass. Yes in this country it is a wildcat.

Did a little more research. The 9,3x53r pushes a 256 gr @ 2210 but only at 49,300 psi Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? I would not try to push any cartridge based on the 7.62x54R to 62,000 psi. The rifle may be able to take it but the CIP max avg pressure for the cartridge is 56,565 psi. Expanding and reloading the case will work the brass, thin it, and weaken it, though just how much is a matter of conjecture. I have been loading the .405 Grenadier wildcat to around an estimated 35,000 psi in the Marlin lever rifle and 45,000 psi in the Mosin Nagant. I do so in the Marlin to be kind to the rifle and in the Mosin Nagant to be kind to the cartridge case. I am confident it can go more but I'm also confident you'd be blowing primers long before getting to 60,000 psi. .

What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. SAKO produces 9.3x53R Finnish ammo. They offer one load, apparently not available in USA. They catalog a 256gr Gamehead bullet with BC of .244 and having muzzle velocity of 2247 fps from a 23.6” barrel. Muzzle energy is 2860 ft-lbs. For comparison, they list a 250gr load for the 9.3x62 at 2395 fps/3184 ft-lbs as well as a 286gr load at 2329 fps/3439 ft-lbs. Think of the 9.3x53R as similar to the .358 Winchester and the 9.3x62 as similar to the .35 Whelen. Surely, the 9.3x53R could be loaded a little hotter but, in the end, they are what they are. Just as a .358 Win is not a .35 Whelen so too a 9.3x53R is not a 9.3x62. Expecting otherwise is bound to disappoint. .

Some research showed the 9,3x53r is spec'd at 340mpa which = ~49,300 psi which is ~12% below the rating of the 7.62x54r so even not trying to turn a 9,3x54r into a 9,3x62; I suspect there is a reasonable chance that moderate range 9,3x62 performance is safely achievable. Interestingly enough, a look at Hodgdon data shows 8 of 11 loads for the 286 grain bullet in the x62 at or below 2325 fps. Looking at the data above it would appear there is a reasonable possibility of achieving low 2300s with an uncompressed load below 56k psi with CFE223, BLC2, or W748 in a 9,3x54r. All that being said I think the 350 grn 405 Grenadier is a more interesting proposition. Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? I recommend we just chamber it for the 400 Jeffery (so you can use .410/411 bullets) , and call it good; yes I can make it feed. Then you have 90 grains of powder space to play with.

Yes it could be made to fit, but here we are back to pressures again; running a Mosin at 60K psi is not what I like to do although they are certainly very strong. I would use a bigger case, more powder, lower pressures, and the same ballistics, like a 50-110, for example. And a 45-70 instead of a 460.

Several years ago I considered the 9.3x54R on the Mosin action, but "considered" is all. If I had become serious about it, I think The Encore would be a good choice. But considering the cost of reamer and dies, etc. decided it was a lark. It's possible/probable that the chamber can be cut with the 7.62x54R reamer, proper pilot, and the throat cut in a separate op. Real gunsmiths will know the answer to that. Instead, I already had a FN Mauser action so I had it barreled in 9.3x57. I still think it was a much better choice. Norma offers two loads. 286 gr @ 2070 fps MV and 232 gr @ 2330 fps MV. I have several boxes of the Nosler 250 gr Ballistic Tips and lots of the Speer 270 gr 9.3 bullets, and a bunch of Norma brass. BTW, I wouldn't intentionally load the 9.3x57 to 62,000 psi - not even close - not even in the FN Mauser action. Why? ************* Degenerate 1:1 1 Then Trump said, "Let Us re-make a Nation in MY Image, after My likeness, to rule over everything in the Nation, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it". Please don't say that is because the brass won't take it. As for a 9.3x53R on a Mosin; did one and it works great. And one this week in 9.3x62. Works great too. That one took a lot more work though. Of course a Mauser would have been far easier but easy is not the point.

If I wanted hot loads, and magnum velocity I wouldn't choose either the 9.3x54R or 9.3x57. Of course the 9.3x54R will work great in a Mosin. That was proven long time ago. And you are right about "easy is not the point". Otherwise we wouldn't be messing with wildcats. It's just a question of how difficult one wants to make it. Since I already had a FN commercial Mauser '98 action and didn't have a Mosin, that choice was easy, and thus the 9.3x57 followed. If I decide to sell my 9.3x57 on the FN action, PacNor barrel, custom trigger and three position safety, Mark X bottom metal, Black Teflon coated, which would you buy - it or the Mosin? And if my rifle was for sale, which it's not, I wouldn't sell it for less than $2,000. Of course that's not the point either. It's whichever gives a guy the most satisfaction. Hence the old saying about making something nice out of a sow's ear - the Mosin being the analogy with the sow's ear. Now that I'm thinking about it, I think I'll check to be sure my FN 9.3 is sighted in and take it hog hunting. ************* Degenerate 1:1 1 Then Trump said, "Let Us re-make a Nation in MY Image, after My likeness, to rule over everything in the Nation, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it".
