It looks to me like there's almost .01" more metal to be removed when going from .284" to .308" than when going from .323" to .338". Perhapes there's not enough difference from 8mm to .338" to clean up all the old rifling....

If memory serves correctly it had something to do with cold forming the original 8mm rifiling. roger
