Hi guys,

Can someone tell me if a Winchester WSM case diameter of .555 diametre will chamber into a Remington SAUM chamber or is it too tight a fit?

The SAUM case diameter is .550

Michael.

It depends on which side of SAMI + or - specs the chamber and the case measure. If the chamber is on the plus side of specs and the brass is on the minus side maybe.
With the dimensions you gave are you measuring unfired brass or just using numbers from a reloading manual?

Hi Duanein,

Many thanks for your prompt reply.

I should be a little bit more specific as to why I am asking.

Firstly, I am just going off the data from a reloading manual. The reason why I wanted to know if the WSM case would fit in an SAUM chamber is that I am seriously considering going the 7mm Remington SAUM route for my Remington 700 SA build over the 7mm WSM. I just think its a better fit in the M700 SA, and from what a lot of others have been saying easier to get to feed due to a more tapered case and 30 degree shoulder as opposed to 35 degree. I also like the longer neck and because it is shorter than the WSM case and combined with the Wyatts extended magazine box that I have it means I can look at seating the various 160gr bullets out further than what I could do with the 7mm WSM.

So, back to my original question about the WSM case fitting into the SAUM chamber - its to do with how I can successfully form 7mm SAUM cases from the WSM case, as both the .270 & 300 WSM cases are readily available down here in New Zealand, where 7mm / 300 SAUM brass is not so readily available and expensive.

I was on the 6mm BR site, trolling through their Forums and came across a discussion on forming 7mm SAUM cases from WSM cases. One guy posted that you could run the WSM case through the 7mm SAUM FL die to form the new case?, and another guy had made a case forming die that allowed you to progressively bump the shoulder back till the WSM case to form the SAUM case.

What are your thoughts?

Regards,

Michael.

I successfully formed 50x 300 SAUM from some brand new Federal 300 WSM cases I had lying around. Turns out that the Federal brass was same size as my Nosler 300 SAUM case. Actually, both cases are well under the .550 SAAMI spec for the 300 SAUM. All I did was then run the Federal cases through my 300 SAUM FL die, then trim to the correct length.

However, as Norma 300 SAUM brass is quite plentiful and reasonably priced, I wouldn't go through this routine with the WSM cases. It was an experiment and good to know there is an option if SAUM cases ever become hard to get.

FWIW, I rebarreled a SAUM to WSM recently and I have three boxes of factory loaded SAUM ammo stranded

One in my possession and two in someone els's possession....all three can be shipped to you if you want them.

Send offer via PM if you like.....they aren't free and shipping will run about $18.00
