I've been thinking of rebarrelling one of my rifles for very long-range shooting, and the thought of a .22 comes up, from time to time. I'm told that the long bullets for 1000yd shooting with an M16, or little "tube guns" in .223, are accurate enough, but are not popular because the cartridge won't "carry up." They are used because of Service Rifle rules. That's immaterial to me, but I got to thinking that a bigger case may deliver more of what I'm seeking. QL tells me that if I use a 2.5" case, like a Texas Trophy Hunter, a .220 Swift (or Improved), or .257 AI necked down, I can get up to 3400fps from a 28" barrel with an 80gr boattail. I'm told that if I use a 7" twist that the bullet will stay stable at 1K. Has anyone experience with this combination? I know that most of the problem of shooting at 1K is from wind judgement, and I shoot shorter ranges(500-700 meters) but know noone that uses these guns. Everyone(me included) uses 6.5s, so I'm expanding my "circle of friends" to see if there's not a better solution. I would appreciate any educated opinion. Thank you... Have fun, Gene

A 22/243 Middlested with a 28-30" barrel will do the trick, an 8 twist barrel is fast enough. I use a 30". 9 twist, 75 Amax at 3600fps for my long range prairie dog rifle. I have one customer shooting the 80gr Sierra in a 9 twist, 26", at 3400fps.
