I've seen the 308 cased necked down to 22 (22/243), 24 (243 Win), 25 (25 souper), 26 (264 Win), 27 (27.08) 28 (7-08) 318, 32, 35 and 375. There's not many wildcats left on that case except for moving a shoulder back or forth, changing the shoulder angle or body taper.

How about necking the 8x57 even larger to 358? I'm sure it's been done before given the number of surplus mausers out there.

This is called the 9X57mm Mauser. altrhough the groove dia of these usually run from .354" to .356", I have shot .358" bullets in a number of them. You are whistlin' Dixie if you are trying to come up with a "new" cartridge based on the Mauser 57mm case! In the late 19th Century the 57mm rimless M88 cartridge case was necked to shoot everything from 5.6mm through at least 10mm, and maybe more! 5.6X57, 6X57 [an early "6mm Rem."], 6.5X57mm, 7X57mm, 7.92X57mm, 9X57, 9.3X57, 9.5X57, etc. Over here we added the .257 Roberts, the 7.62X57mm, and the 8.8X57, a .338 wildcat on the mauser case.

Just get yourself a copy of Cartridges of the World. It will probably help keep you from re-inventing the wheel!

Id go with the 9x57 mauser, 9x56 mannlicher or a 358 winnie. Just ensure that the barrel is a .358 barrel vice a true 9mm barrel. BTW, I have a 9x56 Mannlicher and fortunately the bore measures out at .358. Just expand an 8x75 case and shoot to fireform.

The 338-08 has been done, but is still a wildcat. A 308 necked up to 35 cal is the 358 Winchester. The 358 Hawk is an improved version of the 35 Whelen, with the shoulder moved forward a little and the case blown out.

Ian,
Another possibility is to neck up the 8mmX57 to 338 or take it one step further and obtain a 338x57 MAI(Mauser Ackley Improved), a cartridge that a fellow experimenter in Alaska and I designed. Reamers for either cartridge can be obtained from Dave Manson of Manson Reamers. He did the reamer for the 338x57 MAI. The 57mm cases lend themselves well to functioning thru the M48 action as it was designed originally for the 8mm Mauser cartridge. Good luck in your endeavor whichever cartridge you decide on.
