Does anyone have any experience and or reloading data for the 6.5x55 IMP? The reason that I ask is that this would work in a SA Rem 700 with a watts extended length magazine conversion IF you don't want to load bullets any longer that the 130 grainers.

I have no experience with the 6.5x55IMP. I know this isn't what you want to hear but the IMP will only give you about 60fps over the std both loaded to the same pressure. For my $$ I would build the 6.5x55 and simply load it to modern pressures like the 6mmRem

How much difference in performance would you get from the 6.5x55AI vs. the standard 260? It seems like the shorter case would always fit in a short action better, with longer bullets, then either the 6.5x55AI or 6.5-284. I have a 6.5-284 built on a Remington 7 action, with the factory magazine box, and it handles the 129 grain Hornadys without seating them too deeply.

260Rem.
These are simply QL calculations using the same 130gr bullet loaded to the same pressure. The 260rem is 3000fps the 6.5x55 is 3090fps and the 6.5x55Imp is 3130fps. The AI is 16% larger capacity than the 260 and give a calculated 4% higher velocity. Hmmmm seems like I have used a 1 for 4 ratio before. Granted these are calculations and since barrel to barrel variance is often that high I wouldn't put major $$ on the actual gain.

I'm tracking 3045 FPS with a 120 grain bullet from a 21" barrel in the standard 6.5 X 55
in my M-98.

I wouldn't get excited over a 50 FPS gain but if one is talking 300 fps gain.....You have my attention.

It's a darn serious deer killer "as is".

Thanks for all the input guys. I already have a 6.5x284 in a Rem700 LA. I am just thinking about building a lighter 6.5 on a short action that I have. I also have a LW SS 6.5 barrel just begging to be chambered to something.

In my opinion you can't and the small calculated gain would agree. But just looking at the case it makes more sense than a 243AI since it starts with a touch more taper. Simply load to modern pressure and be happy.

You already shoot a 6.5-284, that case and the 6.5x55 are almost the same length. Why not use the same brass for both rifles?

I have been thinking about that. Big Grin and that will also work if I don't load any bullets heavier/longer than 130 grain.
