Elongating Brass Intentionally
If you wanted 30R Baser or 9.3x74R brass to be LONGER

is there a way to work it so? How much longer can you

make 3 inch brass while keeping sound strength if you

want a "straight walled" end result? Say you want a 3.5"

case from 45-120 brass to shoot .458" bullets. Can you
create such brass? Thanks. wave

I have stretched brass of bigger diameter than what
I wanted to end up, with by annealing and swaging.
You can gain a little length.

Best way is to get straight basic brass which
is longer than the cases you end up with when
formed and trimmed. Then you get longer
wildcats. like I did my 585HE 3.25" long case from
Nyati basic brass that was a half inch longer
than a finished Nyati case at 2.85" I think..Ed

I have never done it, but I remember reading about the process in Nonte's book "Cartridge Conversions." It can be done by "spinning" or "redrawing" the brass - neither process is easy.

You could have brass made to your specs from Rocky Mountain Cartridge company. But it's lathe cut and no as strong or durable as drawn brass.

in the way you ask, no, it can't be done and be left with anything like useful brass.

why? if you draw the brass, the material has to come from somewhere... and since you aren't defining the slug, the material will come from the walls ... .. thinning them to the point of weakness

next
long brass costs more, and anything over 3.25 is tough to get machined, as that is the max working size of most punches ...

in short, about the longest you can get is a 577/500 and neck it down to whatever, and get a slightly longer brass ...

45/120 norma is long, tough, and available

Maybe you can find a "block stretcher" that some out-of-work brick mason has left in a pawn shop and modify that...

I do get ANNOYED at persons unable to comprehend the question.

can 3.25" 45/120 brass be streched to 3.5 .... NO, it can't grow .250" .. not even with your link to a case strecher .. READ it .. here's the link
quote:
v\ required, up to a maximum of approximately 0.050”.

so, can 3.25 be streched to 3.5? He11 no!
can it grow to 3.3? who cares, it doesn't answer the question .. why is it a max of .050"? because it becomes DANEGEROUS and would let go .. the brass has to come from somewhere.. and that somewhere is from the casehead
