Ivan,

Try the Z-Hat.com web site and look for the 358 Hawk Loads listed. These loads should be close to your 35 Brown Wjhelen (back off 10%). I may be able to find my article on the Brown Whelen if you need a copy. Let me know.

Compared to the .358 Hawk, the .35 Brown-Whelen is .020" longer, .007" broader at the shoulder, and has a 35 degree shoulder, versus the .358 Hawk's 17.25 degree. Not much difference between the two.

Richard Conrad did a nice article on the .35 Brown-Whelen in Handloader 187, June-July 1997.

These loads were the ones from Conrad that interested me:

Remington .35 Whelen brass
CCI 200 primer
22" rifle barrel:

225 grain Nosler Partition
IMR-4895/61.0 grains/2750 fps/"about maximum"

250 grain Nosler Partition
IMR-4320/59.0 grains/2620 fps/"about maximum"

275 grain Barnes spitzer
IMR-4895/56.0 grains/2460 fps/"about maximum, 3.26" OAL"

300 grain Barnes roundnose
RL-15/57.0 grains/2340 fps/"maximum"

Made up from a featherweight M70 Classic Stainless or from a Ruger Mark II M77 Stainless donor off a .30-06 or .270, a .35 Brown-Whelen is the ultimate sheep and grizzly rifle, no?

Brass is kind of a nuisance unless you just jam a bullet into the lands to headspace on when fireforming the standard .35 Whelen brass. The Ackley Improved version is easier as it headspaces on the same datum as standard .35 Whelen. The Brown-Whelen neck is only .324" long.

Ivan,
I had a .35BW for awhile built on a Rem 721 action. It did not live up to my expectations velocity-wise so I had it opened up to the .358 Norma Mag.

HDY 200 gr SP @ 2800 FPS
Fed '06 case
Win Std primer
62.0 gr IMR 4320

Speer 250 gr SP @ 2550 FPS
Fed'06 case
Win Std primer
58.0 gr IMR 4320

This was out of a 22" barrel.

Good luck!
Dwayne
