338/500 NE...done before?
Has anyone heard of a 500 NE being necked down to 338? A friend is having a DR built in 500 NE, and wants a 2nd barrel set in 338. I'm aware that the 338 Lapua and 450 Rigby are often used a a pair in takedown bolt rifles, but have never heard of a 338/500 NE.

Hi Biebs,

I just crawled around the internet and came up with nothing.
The concept sounds really good and makes sence to me. I'm sure someone has to of done it before.

Cheers, John

I dont think that is has. What would be the purpose, for use in a single shot or a double rifle? Personally I dont see the need for a 338/500NE, however I have contemplated on necking the 500 Jeffery down to that caliber tu2

it'd work... be a bear to regulate on an unknown load.. and has to be fairly lower pressure...

500 jeffe to 338? there's SO many things wrong with that statement ...(from a 500 jeffe owner/builder and 338 fan) ..

338/378 will do all a human can take, without weighing 20# and having a brake

I think I'll move him towards the 348 Winchester...no sense re-inventing the wheel. Thanks all.

Why not direct him toward the 500/416-- for his starter cartridge.

Forming would be several steps easier-- and --he might decide to stop @ 500/375 Smiler

He's having a 500 NE built....he's wanting a 2nd barrel set a bit smaller than a 416.

How about a 360No.2
A bit obscure, but sounds like just about what he is looking for.

If I correctly remember what I was told, I saw a brass case last year for a 45-110 necked down to .375 for long-range elk shooting. A monster...

Years ago, Elmer Kieth wrote up a wildcat 338x74 he had built. Later, I believe there was an improved version floating around. I think this would be near the sweet spot for a 338 in a single shot or double.

Interesting Idea.

According to QL with a slight taper and 25-degree shoulder it would have approximately 143 grains H2O case capacity.

it would have to be shortened, then, if 143 gr of h20, to be useful in 24" barrels... 100 gr, likely to produce 338 win ballastics at double gun presssure..
