G'day Fellas,
Wondering if anyone can tell me about this cartridge? I currently have a BRNO ZKK602 in need of a re-barrel. It's currently a .223.

I thought about the 6*47, but I don't really need the extra fps. I hunt on smaller properties so noise is a consideration. As is the availability of brass.

I see RCBS make dies so re-loading won't be a drama.

I already have a 22-250 and 222 in the gun cupboard.

I'm looking for something a little different that'll be easy on my pocket

Any info you have will be appreciated

TIA

I shoot a Savage 24V, rebored for 6 X 45mm. Nice small round with 85 grain bullets. I had trouble with case head separations with military brass, so have stuck with commercial brass since.

TomP,
I've heard about the head seperating in ex military cases, something to do with the ammo being fired in a an auto? I can buy ex military cases for about a cent each, I was only going to reload them once or twice then ditch them. I do have a heap of Winchester cases in .223 that I intend to use for range work.

Thanks for your reply

The Savage wouldn't fire military cases before, when it was still a .223, something to do with case dimensions. Someone once said it might be a shoulder dimension. I dunno.

I can reload fired 5.65x45mm to make 6x45mm and they will work once or twice, but usually separate before too long. Now I stick to commercial brass, and use nickel-plated cases so they are visually different from Mini-14 rounds.

I love my 6x45 (6mm-223) and find myself using it and only it for a lot of things...I have shot a number of deer with it and the old 75 gr. Barnes X at 2900 FPS and my grandson uses it exclusively for deer these days...I shot a lot of rock chucks with the 60 gr. Sierra and 70 gr. Bal. tips at about 3000 or better and it shoots sup 1/2 inch groups as a rule....Actually I have very little use for my other varmint rifles these days and sold most of them with the exception of my super accurate old sako clip model Rhiimaki 222 Rem., and I may sell it..

My 6x45 is a custom rifle ala English big bore design on a Sako L-461 round top action, 18 inch barrel and weighs about 5 lbs complete with scope..very different and has a blood red full fiddle back stock and a homemade M-70 3 pos safety..its cute!

Thanks very much for reply Ray,
The velocity you have achieved with an 18 inch barrel has sold this cartridge to me.

The rifle is off to the Smith's to have a 1 in 10 .243 barrel fitted and a 6*45 chamber cut. I'll trim the barrel to suit based on balance and feel, somewhere around the 20 inch mark I would imagine.

Once again thanks to all those that responded, I appreciate your help.

TomP,
Very good idea to use visually different cases. I have done a similar thing with my 7mm-08 and my .308, I only shoot HPs in the 7mm-08 and SPs in the .308. Still have to be very careful though.

I have a 6x47 in Oregon vintage Kimber M-84. It's a fun rifle to shoot off the bench. 222 Mag brass isn't easy to come by, so I think your choice of a 6x45 is a good one. You might want to take a look at the 6mm TCU as it's an improved version of the 6x45 and people who have a Contender barrel in this caliber love them.

My 660 barrel is kind of weird. Gunsmith had a tube where the chamber end was waaayy longer than the .243 chamber. The total length was 26". Barrel was hardly shot, but owner had it taken off so he could have a .22-250 built up. Gunsmith cut the .243 chamber off, rethreaded and rechambered the barrel, then cut and recrowned the muzzle. Overall length was now 20.5" and a sweet carrying little darling.
