That is a round designed by Bill Shehane. Similar to the 408 ChevyTac, but better in every category.

Last I heard, they were doing mile shoots with it.

What I know is that the case has a sharper taper than the ChevyTac, and that adds to distance.

Knowing Bill, he has one heck of a development program going on. And I know Bill.

If anyone has heard anything, please post.

Not to disparage anyone that likes it but this board doesn't have a big long-range/sniper/tactical following so the fine points of that equipment get lost here. But you can sure get one hell of a lot of opinions on the merits of the 7 x 57 AI over 280 Rem or CFR over push-feed

A good thought, but less taper only makes a difference in range if it results in greater case capacity. Take the %-age increase in percent, and divide it by 4. That is the maximum velocity increase you can expect. IE, a 20% increase in case volume would likely at best, result in a 5% velocity...if all went well. Take a current MV of 3000fps and that works out to +150fps at most. In terms of case design, the shorter and fatter it can be made (and fit into an action) the more consistent the velocity and smaller the SD will be. Best example, the 6x47 Remington and the 6PPC. Same case volume, shorter/fatter powder column burns more evenly and quicker...group size and aggregates shrink, the 6PPC rules the accuracy world.

You're taking a little bit of good-natured ribbing on this. It's the 408 CheyTac (Cheyenne Tactical). I believe Bill increased the shoulder angle not the case body taper. The CheyTac was developed as a Very Long Range military sniper round and is capable of 1-mile shooting, as is. But, have you ever heard of a shooter or wildcatter who is satisfied with a factory cartridge?

The new 416 Barrett will probably give the CheyTac a run for it's money.

You are correct that it was the shoulder angle that was increased.

And I've never met a wildcatter satisfied with anything from the factory.

I am really interested to see what the 416 Barrett does. The ChevyTac was trying to fill a niche that probably did not need to be filled - a round between the 50 BMG and 338 Lapua. But, Caifornia really created a demand and Barrett stepped in. If they can keep the rifle weight down to 338 Lapua weight, tey will indeed give CevyTac a run for their money.
