I just finished my 338-'06 Ackley and I'm looking for some pet loads. I plan on using 200 gr Nosler CT bullets for WTD. Any help appreciated. Regards, Rick. John Deer tractors and Sako rifles....just doesn't get much better.

Sakorick, nice piece. Is that a Boyds stock? I did the same cal. using a Boyds and Rem 700. Anyways, my gunsmith got me using 200gr Ballistic Tip with the 338-06AI. I'm using 57.0gr of IMR 4320. It clocks in at 2850 fps and groups 1 in. If you want heavier, I shoot 225gr Hornady Interbond with 61.0gr of H4350. It clocks at 2725 fps and groups 1.25 in. Goodluck. Guy.

SWEET Rifle!!!! I love my 338-06AI I built on a Sako m75 Greywolf-new PacNor supermatch grade stainless barrel, cut to 24", fluted. Built mine to shoot 225gr bullets...I lighter I'd just stick to my Sako m75ss 300WM with 180gr Accubonds. Shoots 225gr Accubonds and 225gr TTSX's like a tack-driver. I used H414, with new Norma 338-06AS headstamped brass and fireform with medium/hot (58.5gr) and still tweaking actual loads..62-63gr. 200gr Accubonds or 210 TTSX or 210 Swift Scirocos would be next with a smaller bullet.

Mighty Peace I think I'd like to try one of the 210gr bullets out there such as the two you mentioned. From what I read on this fine forum that seems to be an ideal catch weight for this cartridge. Cheers.

210gr TTSX or 200gr Accubond would be my pick if I didnt have a 300WM. I built my 338-06AI for heavy bullets and short range shots at elk, moose and bears. I built it over buying a 338WM in a Sako m75 rifle.

Why are you guys using "light weight" bullets in a 338-06? Barstooler

Barstooler, what weight and powder are you using and have you ever tried 210gr bullets?

What length barrel? I am thinking of building one with a 24" Hart. Molon Labe New account for Jacobite

I have used the 210 gr Partition for some time and great results on elk and nigai. I gave the 185 TSX a go in 2004 on elk. Worked fine too though it lost all four petals. This spring I gave the 225 gr Accubond a go on grizzly and black bear. Again, great job, in and out with large exit holes. I plan to stick with the Accubond from here on out I believe. I use VV-N550 with my loads and have been since 1995 when I put the rifle together. Mine is not the Ackley version though.

I used the the Nosler 200 Ballistic Tip for years in mine. I sold it before the Accubond came out but I'd probably be using that now. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

I shoot a 340PDK more like a 338Gibbs than AI. At first I used 180BT for deer and 210Part for larger. Switched to 200 Accubonds for everything and never looked back. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

Am using a 250 gr. Hornady spire point with a full charge of IMR4350 in mine. Shoots one hole groups @ 100. No interest in 200s here.

Unless a guy is trying to hunt everything with one rifle, I would stick to 225-250gr bullets in the 338-06 AI. 180s are the domain of the 30 caliber rifles. Think heavy for caliber....if you need more bullet weight, just add another rifle. Works for me! :-)

I used that caliber quite a bit many moons past, and I wore a chronograph out on it..Surprisingly enough I got my best velocity and accuracy out of IMR-4320..I have no idea what loads and that information is long gone to the bone yard of many of my past calibers, I only save that stuff about 10 years then spring house cleaning takes over..I am not a horder unfortunatly from time to time fo which this appears to be one. I do recall that my favorite bullet was the 210 Nosler at about 2800 FPS, it was an awesome killer. I bailed out and bought a .338 Win when they first came out, it was a used Jack Hogue rifle and probably the best rifle I have ever owned and the .338 win out did the 338-06 quite a bit and in the same size action and rifle so I never went back and I still shoot the .338 win. My new favorite load is a 250 gr. Sierra Game King ahead of 60 gr. IMR4350.

Have not looked at this thread in month. I like 225 gr in 338 caliber for the 338-06 which I believe provides good energy and ballistics out to 300 yards. Beyond 300 yards I like to shoot 250 gr in the 338 RUM because it can handle the heavier bullets. My 338-06 really likes RL 19 powder. When I want to use a 250gr bullet in an -06 class cartridge inside 300 yards I prefer the 35 Whelen. I occasionally shoot 338-06 with lighter bullets (215gr) but do not see what the lighter bullet gains in energy or ballistics inside 300 yards. For something lighter than 215gr, I would just as soon use the 30-06 with a 200gr bullet as the 338-06 with a 210gr bullet because of the better sectional density. I rarely shoot anything below 180gr in the 30-06. If I want to go lighter, I use the 270 Win or my 6.5-06. If I go lighter still I go to the 25-06. As you can tell, I really like the -06 case! I think my next build will be a 280 AI. I was going to do a 6mm-06 but decided to rebarrel my 243 Win to a 243 AI instead. Barstooler

I supose the benifit of a Imp caliber is longer case life, the added velocity isn't much from a practical standpoint. Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com
