I'm considering the 6mm/.284 as my coyote/antelope rifle. What velocities can I expect with 70-75 grainers out of a 26" barrel?

read up on the 6mm-06, it's what you will have. Expect 200-250fps over the 6mm Rem.

IMHO

Alot depends on twist. I had a 6-284 with a 1/14 twist and with 68gr bullets 3800 to 4150fps was pretty normal. Hodgdon has some data for a 1/10 twist barrel 6-284 with 70-75gr bullets low is 3441fps hight 3731fps. I'm now shooting a 6.5x284.

Tom,

Shilen's website recommends 1/14" twist for bullets up to 70gr. and 1/13" for up to 75gr. bullets. Due to the high velocities achieved with the 6-284, I'm leaning towards 1/14" twist.

Friend of mine is a retired gunsmith who "caught the bug" way back when the .284 came out and everyone was building 6mm/.284s. Never heard of a .284 being built, but the 6mm/.284 was HOT, HOT, HOT. (No 6.5/.284 brass available either.)

He would get one built and shooting and it would selllll... Must have done a dozen.

His loading method was to dip the case full of IMR 4350 and seat a bullet and go shoot. This was a decade or so back when Dupont still ran IMR... Load at your own risk. b). He did REAM NECKS! WCF brass necked down. One fella who didn't was whining about pressure sign.

I gave him a Chrony when they were fairly new and he ran some 75 grain Hornadys over it that he had loaded just cause that was what he had at the time on the bench... He felt the load was just "warm." He got 3900 fps consistently over the Chrony. Told me, in interest of barrel life, he thought he would cut the load a bit.

This was a Douglass barrel, 22 inches? Maybe 24. And I am almost certain it was a 1 in 10 twist. His main interest was a deer rifle.

Of course, you are on your own with the information, but as long as "forever" barrel life is not among your goals, you should be happy from his experience and my much more limited experience. Very happy. luck.

My goal is to have 3 rifles built which will all feel similar. A 7 RM with 26" Hart barrel in a Cochise stock for all my hunting needs. A 26" 6/284 with Hart barrel in a Cochise stock for coyotes and antelope. A 243 Win with a 24" Hart barrel in a Cochise stock. The first two will see limited usage whereas the .243 will be my practice rifle.

Bobby I shoot a 6x284 Hart BBL 1 in 10 twist. I can easily push 70 gr Nosler BT 3,900FPS with 56 grs of H4350. But hey bud start 10 15% below that. BBLs and various chamber vary a great deal.I've shot 87gr V-Maxs at 3,600+ before. Shot a coyote with that load at over 300 yards look like he was electrocuted.

All of you with 6x284's how do you all think they will compare to a 240 weatherby? I looked real hard at the 6x284 before I decided to go 240 weatherby in fact the gun smith I am using tried to sell me on the 6x284 but I went 240 anyway. I think they will be nearly identical along with the 6mm-06. What are your thoughts???

B-23,

pretty close in performance, except you will have the goofy Wbee shoulder to try and adjust dies for; and the increased cost of the Wbee cases over buying 6,5x284 brass and necking it down .020".
