Does anyone have performance data or even estimates on this cartridge with 210 or 225 grain bullets? /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." One of my huntin buddies has a 338-284 chambered in a M88 Win. I'll get ahold of him and see if what numbers he has If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

Ok he said he has not yet tried the 225's, and his best with 215's (he may have mistyped 210??) is 2520. However due to the action he is using, he has to seat deeper to get it in the magazine. So in a bolt action, you can probably get a bit hotter. He saw no signs of pressure at 2520 If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

thanks MileHighShooter....that's a couple hundred fps short of my wishes....actually it's not too far from .338 federal performance. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." No prob! Again though, you have to remember he is seating bullets quite deep to function through a very short lever action magazine. In a bolt action I dont see why you wouldnt reach another few hundred FPS more with the gain in powder capacity. If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

I've got an article on the 338/284KCG that showed a high of 2780fps from a 225gr and 24" barrel. Cheers... Con

Since case capacities are pretty much the same, it should perfom like a .338/'06..... "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."

Case capacity with a Horn 225 seated to 3.15", one caliber roughly, is right at 60 gr H20 and nearly the same as a 338-06 and 338 Scoville or other iterations on the '06 size case...within about 5-7 gr H2O. This converson is very similar to the 35/284 and the load data could be used interchangeably as long as you start on the low side and work up slowly. The 284 case and all it's iterations seem to like the slower burning powders...760, H414, N204 have the best velo/density ratios. It works best with the bullets base seated to the base of the case neck even in the 7mm caliber, but because optimal COL is slightly longer than most SA mags can handle you should use a LA...and if you do that, using the longer '06 case will make feeding much smoother and more positive. Seating bullets deeper to work in a SA just causes the same problem the original 284 had...decreased powder capacity and less desirable ballistics, that's why the 7mm-08 gained the upper hand. You don't get the higher ballistics and it costs you more powder just to equal the 7mm-08...all argumentative if you want to nitpic...although there are a few rifles like the Sav99 that work very well with the 338 through 416 cal iterations using the 284 case. I like the 284 case and have or had several wildcats based on this case and did some work with a long throated 284 with bullets seated out as far as possible. I could get very close to 7mm RM factory ballistics, well over factory 280/7mm Express ballistics, using a Ruger long action. But the longer cases always fed much better so the barrel was set back enough to rechamber to 280 and it went to my sister-in-law. The 338/284 is a very good wildcat whose time came and went I think. The 338 Fed or 338 RCM with their factory ammo availability and equal or better ballistics is a better bet for SA's and a 338-06 or 338 WM is better for LA's.

This fits my wishes.....can you furnish more loading data on this..... I agree with El Deguello that it should shoot like the .338-06 due to similar capacities but sure like to see what others have experienced. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." 2850fps with 210gr NP's. 24 in. barrel. Rifle indicates that I probably could go faster but the SD and accuracy is outstanding at this speed so, saw no need to do so. Outstanding round in my estimation.
