Roger:

It's true that the various 9mm rifles sometimes exhibit different bore and groove diameters, but that was before normalization. It's not really a purposeful two-tier solution I believe.

As to the 8mm field, the gradual replacement of the "I" size bullet by the "S" size bullet in the hunting field was a process that went over several decades. The original preference for tight barrels in civilian use was in the quest of accuracy (some gunsmiths going to lands as tight as 7,70 or 7,75 mms). Only after World War II, this gradual development came to an end, and the "I" cartridge was fully replaced by the "S" variant in hunting use. One of the many reasons certainly was that the majority of existing hunting rifles did not stay in Germany after 1945/46 :-),

The last special purpose "I" bullets were a production lot of Brenneke TIGs that were sold as remainder from Waffen-Stark in Nrnberg until several years ago. If market demand were there, Mr. Mank from Brenneke will gladly produce another run. Do you know a US wholesaler who will order a batch of 100,000 or so ?

Carcano
