I have a Marlin 62 in 30 Carbine leaning in a dusty corner that wants to become a more useful 22 somethng. I already have a 62 in 218 Bee and don't want a Hornet/K-Hornet, so the 22 Carbine looks like a winner. What rifle do you have and what sort of performance are you getting out of it?

Dear 260Rem and Cigar,
I have done several of these mostly all on the M1 Carbine. I did do one on a cute little Uberti Rolling block too. I have gotten the best accuracy/ballistics with 4227[IMR] and about 13-14.0 grs. Work up to this as it is at or near max. I think[?] the barrels are being sold as a kit by Gun Parts now. That would be the easiest way to accomplish the job and the cheapest as the barrels have the gas porting already done.I can`t find the ad but a call to GP might work. Remember to always make the cut in the breech for the bolt to slip into. This reinforces the bolt and will prevent blowbacks or at least lessen the possibilities.

Aloha, Mark

Cigar57:

I have a 5.7 Johnson Spitfire custom chambered in a Douglas Premium air-gaged blank and fitted to an IAI M1 action. I had this barrel made by a machinist in South Carolina who used to specialize in these conversions. It has the gas port, grooves for the slide to ride in, etc. all machined into the barrel. The barrel contour is slightly heavier than a factory M1 about .700" at the muzzle, as I recall.

I have never fired this combination. I do not have the bolt and other parts required [only the receive and this custom barrel], but bolts, triggers, etc. are readily available from various on-line sources.

If you [or anyone else] is interested in purchasing this IAI M1 carbine reciever and custom barrel, please e-mail me.

Thanks,

Jordan

I have one built on a Rem 700 ADL. Believe it is a 22" Shilen barrel. I have not dinked around with loads too much - but I get about 1/2" groups with 13.4 grains of 4227 and 45 grain Remington softpoints. Does a nice jobs on prairie dogs and it's quiet enough that they usually don't go down.
