As for the action conversion, if you go longer, you may not have to alter the ejector. If the action is a classic then yes. If it's a push feed then no. If you do indeed go longer and remove the magazine block then you will need to shorten the bolt stop.

You could always go shorter 270/08 or 270/250 savage. Depends on your "need".

I have an "extra" .270 that I am considering converting into ??. It is a nice post-64 mod. 70. It has a newish Douglass .277 barrell, which I do not particularly want to replace. It does, however, have a very long leade, which I think has given it some accuracy problems (2 MOA at 100 yd.; same at 200 yds.). Last night I was trying to come up with something in a .277 bore that might be able to take advantage of the longer throat, but couldn't think of anything. Any thoughts/suggestions/ideas would be welcome.

Set the barrel back, and have a very nice time with your 270 winchester.

Your magazine length is of course the thing that prevents you from taking advantage of that deep throat. All is not lost ,however. Get a single shot follower, modify the bolt face and rechamber to a .270 Ultra goody. roger

Nah, just take the spacer out of your magazine, and change out the ejector, then you can seat your 270's out to meet the lands.
You'll likely get a fair speed increase in the deal.

Dah! The thread is for a conversion to a wildcat, not how do I get another plain 0ld run of the mill, every day, not very trendy .270. The man is on the WILDCAT forum and not on the gunsmith forum. You Bwana be constructive and let your mind wander and latch onto something big time here. roger

What about 270 Apex? I have one sitting in my safe, the only one I know of, a 7mm Rem. necked down to 270 (or alternatively 264 necked up, but the 7mm brass is cheaper).

Don't ask me how it performs as I have had it 3 years and only shot five times to see about the fire forming and how well it would work. It is my most beautiful gun and spends all its time in a dark safe. :-(

Well, the 270 Apex is good, and there's the 270 Gibbs, 270 AI, the 270 Weatherby, the 270-7mm RM. Probably lot's of others I can't remember. - Dan

Take the spacer out, reset the ejector, chamber to 270 Gibbs and seat the bullets out. You get the very most without opening the bolt face and feed rails (doing that would be cheaper to trade guns).

Roger, you're right.
You're right.
Actually, when you think on it, turning the barrel back is a good idea no matter what you do, so the lead is really a non-issue.
More just, what case do you want to use?
I personally feel the '06 case is about perfect for this bore, or more exactly for this bullet selection.
If there were 160 spitzers available, I'd go for a 270-9.3x64mm! What is that bore called in metrics? 6.8mm? 6.8x64mm.
How much lead are we talking here?
A little freebore, or do you need to go to a 3.6" cartridge?
Maybe we need a 277 STW round here.

If you can't reach the lands now because of magazine length going to another case and keeping the same magazine won't help. If you set the barrel back then you can recut the chamber with a short throat. This could be done in just about any 06 based wildcat or just recut the 270Win. Or as been mentioned take the spacer out and change bolt stop and ejector. With a 130 grFB you should have a 3.5"+COL. Providing you don't have any feeding problem this is by far the easiest way to go. With this longer usable case capacity you might see 70-80fps velocity increase with the appropriate increase in powder.

Tell me about the 270 Apex. Is this just a 7MM Rem. necked down? Wouldn't that require re-doing the bolt face? I've read good things about the 270 Gibbs, but I do not know anyone who has used one personally. That is what I have been leaning to, however.

From memory, my O.A.L. guage gives me a figure of about 3.570 to the lands. I have been just loading to the limit of the magazine so far, but I anticipate removing the spacer, etc. as several folks have suggested.

The 270 Apex, if memory serves is a 277 on a shortened 300 H&H case, with the original case taper preserved. Not the hottest 270 around, but it should feed like greased snot. Yes the bolt face would have to be opened up. I have a couple of the Gibbs cartridges, the 240 and the 7mm. They do increase the velocity of the bullets a fair bit, not as fast as the 270 Wby, but a good 100-150 fps over the std 270. - Dan

Look !Jim, Go with the 270 ultra mag. single shoot. Get yourself a portable table and seat, pack a nice lunch and find yourself a bean field. If you are lucky you can get this done by the middle of summer. I've heard stories that July venison is mighty tasty. roger
