Anybody have any experience with the 6mm AI. I have an old 338-06 built on a 98, and it looks like that may be a good platform for this cartridge. Loads, velocties, and general info, would be appreciated. Jerry

Hi Jerry, OK, what do you want to know. As for barrel twist, Id go with a 1-9" twist. A 1-8" twist blows up the 105 A-Max and the 1-10" twist will only stabilize up to a 100gr bullet. The 1-9" will stabilize everything from the 55gr Balistic Tip up to the 105gr A-Max. My 1-10" twist likes the 70gr TNT's and 70gr Blitzkings. They go from 3650 - 3700 FPS. Check out Mike J's 6mm Ackley web page at http://www.anglefire.com/sd/6mmackley/ There is a lot of info on that site about the 6mm Ackley. If you have anymore questions, e-mail me and I'll see if I can help. Good luck and good shooting, The Big Dog PS, I shot my 6mm ackley in the 500 meter bench rest matches and took 1st place for the year in the light gun class a while back. That caliber really shoots.

Afew guys on longrangehunting.com are shooting that cartridge with the A-Max + big Berger's as well, and are producing fantastic groups with it (in the 0's). I hava a Rem. 700/26" Shilen but twist is too slow for the LD's/VLD's. But i love the cartridge and will be rebarrelling soon for a long-range coyote rig. Big Dog, your link doesnt work - I just get a lot of pop up windows, but nothing about the 6mm Ackley. Best regards, Fritz

This past Saturday I tried some 95 Nosler partitions with RE-22 in my 6mm A.I. With it's 24" medium sporter barrel I got four groups of three rounds each averaging 1.1". I also averaged over 3300 fps. With a lighter load of RE-22 and Sierra 100 grain spitzers, getting an average of 3100 fps, groups stay under 1". [ 11-02-2003, 00:14: Message edited by: Bob C ]

I recently had a shot out 6mm Rem rebarreled with a Pac-Nor barrel and chambered in .244 Remington Ackley Improved. I went with a 12 inch twist because I wanted to do some bullet racing in the under 80g range and maybe shoot some squrrils and crows. The link to the loading data is very helpful.

Hello Jerry, I chose that cartridge for my "long range" benchrest rifle, and am pleased with it thus far.... The barrel is 1 in 8" twist stainless Shilen, heavy varmint contour, finished at about 26". Shoots moly-coated Sierra 107s right at 3100 fps using Win brass, H414, CCI BR primers. Drop from 100 yard zero is ~11 moa @ 600 yds, ~25 moa @ 1000. Not sure exactly what the drop was at 1 mile, because I had to hold over using the mil-dots and vary the power to multiply the mil value (probably ~75 moa total) . I did get one out of 5 shots "on paper" at the mile, and the hole was round - made me feel a little better that though it was likely no longer super-sonic, it was probably still "stable". Have about 500 rds through it so far, but not sure how long it will last - I shoot it in Heavy gun class, and 10 shots in two minutes ("run" the condition) really heats up the barrel.... I consider the recoil mild, gun weighs just under 16 pounds. Regards, Bill

Guys: Thanks for all the replies. They are greatly appreciated. DJL4570, to which link are you referring, there wasn't one specified in your post. Savage 99: Thanks for your input, but this is not going to be a huntig rifle. I plan to build it with a 28-30" barrel probobly Pac-Nor. I have considered the 6-06, but action length limitations have forced me to scratch that one. Bill M. Thanks for all your info. I plan on shooting the rifle in the varmint class, and on dogs, chucks, etc. Thanks Jerry

The one posted by Cold Bore www.angelfire.com/sd/6mmackley BTW, The shooter who recommended Pac Nor likes the three groove version. These have very wide lands and should be more resistant to throat erosion. Of course he told me this after the gunsmith had already ordered the barrel so I got a five grove. I have one on a blueprinted Rem 700 with a 26" Kreiger 1-8 twist barrel. Shoots 107 Sierras or 105 Bergers at 3150fps with 50g of vit-165 into little bug holes out at +500 yds. The 6-284 was a bit overbore and the 6BR is a bit too slow with heavy bullets at long distance in the wind. Have one built, you won't regreat it!

Among my toys is a custom Remington 700 that I had rebarreled and chambered in .244 Remington Ackley Improved. I shot some uninspiring groups with a new load and finished off the target by fireforming some more brass. The bullet is an 80g Remington Power Lokt driven by 47.5g of AA2700. This load does a very nice job of fireforming the case and it is exceptionally accurate. I was working on the lower left group on this target when a fat fly had the temerity to land on my target. Here's a closeup Given the load and the energy consumed by fireforming I figure the bullet was going at least 3000fps at the target.

quote:My 6AI has a K&P barrel with a 1/10 twist barrel and it's my antelope rifle. I use 95 Gr Noslers and get 3391fps. I also have two other rifles that are just good old 6mm Rem. One is a Dan Dowling custom and the other is a 40x with a factory 1/12 twist barrel. I think the 6mm Rem is a good case to AI or just leave as is. Well good luck. Tom

I have a 6mmAI that I had McGowans build from a Mauser 98 Action I got at a gun show. I really like the gun but have not been able to find an exceptional load for it yet. I want to use it for dear and target and was playing around with the 100gr Nosler Part. I had the barrel cryo treated to see if I could lengthen the life on the barrel.
