Hi All...I got my valued Wildcat Cartridges Book back from the bookbinder who put a very nice cover on it so it will last longer.
Anyway, the comment I want to make..(The Book has all kinds of Wildcats from the Aces of Yesteryear,
Ackley, Gebby, Gipson, Neidner, etc.
It seems Ackley really liked the .30 Newton case to play with..he made an "Ackley .270 Newton" which is simply the .30 Newton case necked down to .270...
he claims speeds upwards of 3500 fps with the 160 gr. Barnes Spitzer bullet & remaining velocity at 500 yards at 2500 fps!
Also, on the back of my old Speer .30 Newton Box it says: ".270 Cal Newton....One never marketed by Newton. Beyond all expectations in regards to velocity." Once Marc Jamison gets the .30 Newton cases made, it will be a great base case for wildcatting. I have one in 7mm or .280 Newton & am getting real good results, but not done with my testing yet...
In the same excellent book by Dick Simmons...Neidner, Gipson made copies of the .400 Newton & called them the .400 Neidner & the .400 Gipson...but were made just like the .40 Newton by necking up the .30 or .35 Newton cases. I have one of those too. So the parent case, the .30 Newton can be necked to form all kinds of unbelted, potent wildcats. And the history shows they worked out quite well.
Best Regards,
Tom

Tom

On one of the other threads I posted a photo of my 270 Newton cartridge. I guess you missed it. I have only seen 3 of these cartridges, and one box. I don't know why they are so rare.

hi Ray: Yes, I did see it before. Who knows how many .270 Newtona were made...if you call Speer as I have, old records are gone: they tell me as the company changed ownership over the years.
There is an old timer who is said to work for the answer dept. of American Rifleman, who used to be a Speer employee way back & I was told to contact them...but haven't done so.
Thanks for the photo,
Tom
