I have a large-ring mauser action that is currently in the form of a 30-06 and will be rebarreling it sometime later this summer.

I've been looking at the 375-06, 416 taylor, or 458 win mag. But now wondering if there is anything larger out there that might be available.

I'm not overrun with buffalo, tigers, or elephants - I just think a light 50 would be a ton of fun.

Thanks in advance -

Nate

Many folks think the Wby case is too big for the Mauser, but if you're not one of those, "500 A-Square Short." Smiler
It will sling a 600g out at about 2100 fps with a 24" bbl, or my name's not John Jacob Jingle!
Or cast a 500g and push it past 2450 fps.
Sound like a good time?

Keep it simple, a 550 Express, the shortened version of the 550 mag.Straight case,
plentiful brass, hairy power with bullets
up to 700 gr.Jeffe has one and many others being setup.Ed.

Thanks Bwana and Hubel Smiler

Either of you have a link to a cartridge drawing and/or know of a gunsmith who might have one of these reamers in stock?

Additional question -

Is anyone using cast bullets in the 416's? (rem mag or taylor)

Thanks.

If you want a standard length cartridge but decide not to go with one of the standard length ultra-bores (like the 585 Nyati, 550 Express, 500 Jeff, 495 A2, etc.) I've always thought the 404 Dakota or 416 Howell made alot of sense for someone wanting a big bore (but not too big) on a standard length. You can also build the slightly longer 404 Jeff on a standard length with modification to the magazine or via aftermarket bottom metal.

I'd personally go with the 500 A-sq short. 50 caliber bullets will be alot easier to come buy than larger ones, and 600 gr @ 2200 is a pretty impressive load.
