Now I know that even tho it's adverted as a 800fps gun, that is usually a bit optimistic. Well today I found out just how optimistic it is. Crow Mags and Preds didn't even break 500fps, they went 460 and 485fps.

Superdomes, Benji domes, Beeman doms and crosman domes went at best 580fps. I'd like to see the pellets they test at 800fps.

I chronographed one B21 and B22 chinworkbows and the both were over advertised velocity by 10-20 fps. This is brand new, and as I understand it, it takes a while to overcome china's "hand fitting" of the moving parts in the cheaper guns

Hey there:

My RWS-34 in 22 caliber averages 700 fps shooting thru my chrono. I shot about all pellets thru it, Beeman Crow Mags, Crosman Flat nose, RWS Superdomes, Super Points. I am well pleased with mine. I knew years ago companies give their guns a 100-200 fps more for a lil sales gimmick.

Mine has no problems killing squirrels, rabbits, etc. Will rip thru new "tin' the metal roofing which is plenty tough.

All the best,

If you have access to another chronograph, try clocking the gun again. If the results are the same, it needs to go back to the factory.

Very good thread.
I need to run my guns over the chronograph.

my rws mod 34 got really sick last week and it shot so slow it would hardly get the 90ft to the target... it used to smack that target hard! so i sent it to get rebuilt at a rws smith in ark. i hope it comes back with at least the same power it had before..........

Joe,

Not that we want to cheat too awful much on the Air Rifle velocities..........

Big Grin

but here's a coupla helpful hints that assisted me in getting more consistant and (what I consider) definately more reliable readings with Air Rifle Pellets from my Chrony (Beta Chrony).

IME taking the diffuser screens off the Chrony helped alot

Shooting lower over the Chrony (you're on your own here); say 2"-4" above it gave considerably more constant results

Taking the readings on cloudy or overcast days helped alot vs. bright sunshine.

Also since there is so little muzzle blast from an Air Rifle you can move the Chrony in pretty close; say 10 feet.

Still after all the Hoopla the readings which were much more consistant were still no where close to what the factory advertised for my BSA Tactical XL.

Cheers,

These are OK ...

I tried running pellets through my pact chronograph and it wouldn't pick them up. How do you get them to register?

Don't know the rate just now. But as we are usually shafted over here on price, it's probably 60 bucks or so.

I've chronographed lots of pellets (.177, .20 and .22) over an Oehler M35P. I set the start screen 1 ft in front of the muzzle and shoot 2-4" above the screen. A bright day really helps or a bright DC light shining on the diffusers. I get very consistant readings.

To the subject though; the "optomistic" velocities are always taken with the lightest pellet available. Thus heavier pellets are going to be slower. However, it is interesting to note that if the spring powered air rifle is a 12 ft/lb air rifle the 12 ft/lbs remains constant regardless of of the pellets velocity. For example; .177 pellets that I've tested range from 6.9 gr to 11.9 gr. Obviously since the power of the spring remains constant the heavier the pellet the lower the velocity. My RWS M54 .22 cal is advertised as a 900 fps air rifle and it will just make that with 11.9 gr RWS Hobby WCs, with 14.3 gr CPs it is right at 800 fps, with with 16.4 gr Vortex Lampreys it is 704 fps and with CMs it is 660 fps.

The actual velocity all depends on the weight of the pellet with springers.

That is important here where one too many foot pounds could get you busted Eeker

the formula is
FPS x FPS x Weight in Grains, divided by 540240
(or 540280 is sometimes stated)

also the fit can make a big difference
a loose light pellet can have left a springer barrel before the spring imparts all its energy

where a heaver or tighter one can soak up more energy by having a slower start

The 12 lb limit was brought in to cut down on the cheaper more powerful American airguns being imported over here. It was just an underhand trade restriction.

It's a shame as a .22 12lb gun is pretty useless really. Past 30y the pellet is dropping like a rock. A .177 12lb gun is OK to 40y. But the pellet is still going quite slow. A bird will often be able to duck between the time it hears the shot and the pellet gets there.

With a bit more power they are great, but then we have to register the gun and you get restricted to where you can use it etc. Just like a firearm.
So mostly you might as well get a Rimfire.

The specialist

You have my sympathies, I hope that does not happen here with the current larger caliber, more power to hunt big game with an air rifle craze. With my 20 ft/lb M54 and shooting quite flat to 90 yards I just can't fathom using a 12 ft/lb .22 cal air rifle! The R9 .20 cal at 14 ft/lbs is the bare minimum for "backyard" hunting for me. Wish you always the sun to your back and the wind in your face....

Does anyone know how fast a M34 is going with standard and heavier Kodiak pellets?

Mine seems to be very flat shooting. Same point of impact at 10 yards as 30 yards.

Ive hit chickens at a fast walk just by holding on front or just in front of chest out to 30 yards, full deflection.

Pretty hard to guess FPS bewildered

but

A 700 fps .22 is a bit gutless
800 better
900 usefull
1000 Let's go hunting
1100 Bugger me that's fun
1200 hard to achieve
1300 probably BS
1400 Pellets melt and spray out the end

hope that helps

I went back a different day and shot over the chrony again. Same results.

I'll be contacting RWS/Umarex to find out about a rebuild. I probably just got a bad one. At its best, it was a treat to shoot. Now, not even a fun toy.

I think it is about two years old now. One summer of shooting.
