My buddy Ralph sent me some of the GAMO Rocket Pellets to try. They appear to be a Hollow Point style Pellet with a very small Round Copper Plated Steel Ball(I Tested it with a Magnet) inserted into the Hollow Point. The exposed portion of the Ball measures 0.104" and the Pellet extends slightly past halfway up the Ball to hold it in place. So, the Ball is about 0.11" or so in actual diameter. I weighed a good many and they came out from 9.2gr<->9.4gr, with the ElCheapo electric scale skipping over 9.3gr. The vast majority were 9.2gr. I found it interesting that there was a fine Black Powder applied to them. It feels like, and appears to be - Graphite, but that is only a "guess". Perhaps it was applied to help them make a slicker-quicker trip through the barrel. I've not had a chance to try them - yet. Ralph mentioned they really PENETRATE for him in some random Test Comparisons with the Crosman Pellets we have been messing with. Has anyone else tried them? How did they do for you? Accuracy? Penetration?

To lube or not to lube? That is the question. Lead is quite slippery anyway. There are all sorts of silly pellets, like the "Prometheus" plastic sabot with a copper core. Great for car windows not much use for anything else. Or the Red tipped things, cool looking but no advantage. "When doing battle, seek a quick victory."

I have a few of those from 25-30 years ago. I was trying to get them to shoot in a 22Hornet with only a "Primer". Without any Powder, the Primers burned so dirty that the regular Lead Pellets would "STOP" inside the barrel on the 3rd<->5th shot. I'd started with regular Lead Pellets and decided to add a tiny bit of Fast Powder to clean-up the Burn. When I got above 1gr of WW-231, something bad was happening to the Pellet. I "guessed" the Skirt was being blown off which caused them to go out of control. Tried the Prometheus Pellets and they did better, but accuracy still needed a bit less than 1.0gr of the WW-231. Fun exercise but basically a waste of time.

bought my first chrony a few weeks ago and have been busy checking everything i have that launches a projectile. yesterday's exercise involved an RWS 36 in .177 that i bought in 1984 and has had maybe 300 rounds through it since. unfired for at least 6-7 years. first pellets tested were old Beeman crow magnum h.p.( weight unknown- wasn't own the tin). first 3-4 shots were 575 to 600 fps. put 2 drops of Crossman pellgun oil in the chamber and by shot 20, velocity was up to average of 875 +/- 10 fps.and stayed dead constant with 3/4 inch group at 25 yds. total of about 75 shots. switched to recently purchased Gamo raptors(alloy). again, don't know the weight. average was 1075 +/- 10 fps. with same group size as Beeman's AND SAME POI!!!! I realize the heavier Beeman's will have more energy at the same velocity but i am curious if the 20% higher velocity of the raptors would offset the weight advantage. without knowing the weight of either pellet, i know no way to answer the question. i supposed the best thing would be to use the raptors on small bird and the Beemans on squirrels/crows/ rabbits. any thoughts? the good thing is that i can switch back and forth without re-zeroing the scope. Is that a Synthetic Oil? All of this is new to me Amazing to me! There is an excellent chance the "typical weight" will be shown for them at the PyramidAir site, just click on Ammo and then 0.177". Or, if they do not have those Pellets, you can PM me and I can weigh 5-10 of each for you. Haven't used either, so I've got no idea. Yes, that is outstanding.
