I was given a new airgun by my dad recently, he picked it up at an auction for $125. It is a RWS 460. It is new and appeared to be unfired, I took the plastic off of it. Anyway, it looks like a real quality gun and works great. I bought a really low cost scope for it and could not get it to zero. What kind of accuracy should I expect to get from an airgun like this? I really don't know what to expect from it. The last airgun I had was a $40 daisy about 20 years ago. Any ideas? I was getting 4-8 inch groups out of it at 25 yards.

Do you know how to shoot a springer?

Start off on a quite firm rest, but hold the gun with both hands. Firm enough grip to hold it, but not too tight.
Let the gun recoil.

Whatever you do try to be consistent with your trigger pull and use good breathing technique.

I'd say you should get 2" gropes at 25y off a rest. To start off.

Stringers are quite hard to learn to shoot really well, but it's worth the time.
On a good day I can hit a quarter at 35y most every shot standing, with my .177 and 6x scope.

Make sure the scope is tight, they do move on stringers unless they are well fixed on.

If it's this gun ... You better REALLY thank your dad. It's a serious tool. And you should get a nice scope for it.

It will put pellet on pellet at 35y easy.

That is the gun. He did get an incredible deal on it. Cabela's has this gun listed at about $620 with a scope. I have to admit no knowledge of shooting this type of airgun. I have 30+ years of shooting and reloading, but this is my first experience with a magnum airgun. My eyes aren't up to using iron sights anymore, so I did purchase a cheap Wal-mart airgun scope. But, the results were really disappointing. You suggested a good scope. What would be a good scope? I know that this type of gun will destroy a good quality rifle scope, but I don't see alot of options for airguns out there? Any reccomendations?

You won't zero the gun with that scope on it - the reticle is bouncing around and will eventually break.
My HW-97 wears a Leupold 3x9, with AO set down to 10 yards, which you need. That scope will take any springer recoil.
My PCP's wear Bushnell 4200 6x24 SF scopes with Mildot and they are fantastic for that application.
The 460 has a fair amount of springer recoil and is going to show the weakenesses of a cheap scope pretty quickly. Head over to Kitching's Airgun Forum (google it) and post your question. Lots of guys have scoped their RWS guns over there and they will advise the least expensive workable solution.

Something like this ...

http://www.leupold.com/hunting-and-shooting/products/sc...33mm-ultralight-efr/

Or the other Leup Airgun Scope.
If the budget will stand it.

And get a GOOD mount I'd suggest one piece, and LockTite the rings to the scope body.
Or use the rings with a griping surface in them.
If the mount has a locating pin use it.

That gun should be accurate enough to warrant a Mildot reticule. Even with a hi power airgun you still get a fair bit of drop once your past your zero point.
And for small game it's just easier with Mildots.

Don't know how a Bushnell would stand up to it.
A .22 is less violent than a .177
My light little .177 BSA would eat any scope.
When it was hopped up.
I had to take the power down to a sensible level.

Just guessing at the moment, I'd say if yours is a .22 with 16 grain pellets doing 950fps or more you'd probably zero round 40y
A .177 8.5gr at 1000fps would be 5 or so more yards.

I lost my airgun ballistic calculator. I liked the old "Chairgun" program.
But there is a new one that's too much hassle to use for me.
