I watched a video of a guy dropping a hog with a big bore air rifle that was quiet. I'm interested, but clueless.

Where do you find them?
What do I look for?
Which brands are recommended?

I'd like to quietly take out 'yotes in the yard typically, but would like it to be capable of deer or pigs.

all big bore air rifles are quiet compared to centerfires but none are truly quiet. research Haley, Quackenbush, Evanix and you will find options up to .458 but they are NOT going to be quiet. my shrouded barrel Daystate .303 Wolverine sounds about like a .22 rf. silencers are available "over the counter" for air rifles( since by definition they are not "fire"arms), and they help but at the end of the day- power output=sound output.

Keep in mind that most big bore airgun shooters have prior experience with precharged airguns and the equipment needed to fill them. The tanks and pumps could double the cost of getting started.

I have a few and can tell you they are fun. All are precharged pneumatic and they take a bit of support gear which needs to be figured into your financial and storage planning. Hand pumps take forever and are a workout, tanks are a good midpriced option and compressors are big and expensive(the shoebox is small but slow.)

My issue is there is nothing to hunt legally in Oregon so having them is just for killing rocks and paper etc. which is no big deal but at times I look at all the bigbore airgun stuff and think I should sell it all and free up the space and cash to buy another 600NE Smiler then I think maybe I should buy another Hailey or amybe the new Rouge. If you ever come to Bend you can shoot all mine to your hearts content, my brother lives in the Boise area and i could get a couple to him if you wanted but it would take a couple months.

Pellet sizing is critical and unless you cast I think they are expensive but great ones are available for sale. Any questions feel free to ask and pm is fastest way to get me.

Matthew, there is a thread over on ifish.com in the hunting forum about trying to legalize air rifle hunting in Oregon.
