I just started shooting 22 rimfire silouette and was hoping that there is a way to practice in my backyard with a pellet gun of some sort, specifically for shooting the steelchickens from the offhand position. My normal shooting area just 15 minutes away has just been closed down because of all the slob shooters out there who shot tv's and other glass objects and left there empties all over. Anyway, I figured with the right set up I can shoot in my backyard without bothering anyone if I have the proper equipment. I can only spend up to around $200 and this is for specifically practicing shooting offhand at the chicken targets. I don't plan on hunting with the airgun, I just need accuracy to a max of 30 yards, maybe not even that far, and a rifle with as small of report as possible. This is my first time on this air rifle forum but I have received much wisdom on the other sites within this forum. I'm 59, use glasses, and would need a scope. I look forward to your recommendations.

A few of the boys here have got the new Ram powered guns, they seem to like them. or Perhaps a Sheridan Blue Streak, or a similar pump up airgun. A Spring powered gun is quite different to shoot than a Rimfire. Precharged are too expensive. "When doing battle, seek a quick victory."

Super88--Glad you made it to this section--hope you continue. You ask what time it is so to speak--but I'm going to tell you how to build a watch. First off a rifle and scope for $200 is a pretty tall order. At 59 you most likely are wearing reading glasses or bifocals of some sort. If so try this if you have never done it. Get some print you can't read with your naked eye(that is probably easy). Now with your index finger curled real tight to where it leaves a very small hole at the joint, place that hole next to your eye and look through it and see if you can now read the print. You can do same thing with piece of paper with pin hole in it--place right next to eye. That small hole makes your eye focus which it cant do on it's own--that's how glasses work I am told. If you are able to read the print through the hole, that says a peep sight will work for you. They do same thing. Buying a peep sight much cheaper than a scope. Next thing is you want low noise. Spring air (spring air guns are the ones you cock one time and are compressing a spring)are more noisy. So if a peep will work--as Specialist said get a Sheridan Blue Streak and a Williams peep sight. You will be practicing with peep and possibly shooting matches with scope--but practice is practice.

Try a Qb 78 with a scope. It is available at Archer airguns or flying dragon airguns. It is the Chinese version of the Crosman160 and the bolt action is very close to that of a .22 rifle.

No pumpers, loud and in short order you'll get tired of pumping CO2, may be loud, mostly low quality, and shots will not be consistant accuracy will suffer. gas ram more expensive for the most part compressed air (if you have to ask, you don't want to know) That leaves Spring Piston. the old standby for good reason. One cock, low muzzle blast, low noise( the spring is the loudest part of the shot only because its next to your ear) very accurate and self contained. They are the best selling type of airgun. look around for a RWS M-34 combo, they can still be found for around your price range and for less without the scope. Built to last, fair trigger, easily repaired if you have a problem thirty years down the road.
