Like most of us, I have a collection of various sovents, cleaners, lubricants, greases and other compounds in my cleaning arsenal. I have my preferences but am always open to trying new products. Wipeout, for example, a relatively new product that has worked for me. However, when we head to the fields for an extended trip, we can't always take our full kit. Just the basics for proper field care in the conditions we will be in. I will be heading to Zimbabwe next year and would like your thoughts on Break Free CLP. I will probably be taking my Otis Rifle kit, extra patches, caliber appropriate nylon brushes, and perhaps Hoppes Bore Snakes for each rifle. I will be using the Otis supplied solvent and maybe a little tube of Rem Oil. I don't want to take any aerosols and would like to limit the liquid items in the kit. I do like to properly grease the bolt lugs and rails but am concerned about dust and grit accumulation as I will be hunting in the mostly scrub brush country of the Lowveld. My question to the group is, what do you think of Break Free CLP for my trip as an "all in one" type of product? Your personal experiences with it will be appreciated. Also, any other product suggestions are appreciated. Thanks, RCG

I like to use the break free for general lube and rust prevention. I will warn you about taking a lot of solvents on a plane. I have done it several times, then had a guy at the Denver airport throw a fit about flammable items-my 1/3 of a bottle of solvent. As I was on my way back from BC, had my flight cancelled, forced to spend the night I wasn't in too fine a mood anyway and it wasn't getting any better when this dick was about to make me miss another flight. He said he had to go get a supervisor, I told him to throw the f-ing bottle in the trash. He also raised hell because he said I had live ammo in with it, it was a case I had a bullet seated into to set up a die, it had no primer or powder in it, I had to show him that as well. A shot not taken is always a miss

I like it a lot for lube and rust preventative,They make a non-ammonia bore cleaner that works rather well,,seems to lift lead out of the grooves if you let it set and do it's thing. There's also a pcl with no mil-spec.# that's a lot cheaper but seems to work just as well as the clp,,Clay

Break Free is a very good lubricant and rust inhibitor. The only down side is it contains teflon and that is a no-no for inside the bore. Unless you plan on running a solvent patch through the bore each morning, I would stick with a low solvent gun oil like Butch’s Gun oil, or Montana X-Treme oil, etc... Take a medium sized bottle of copper solvent in a non-labeled plastic solvent bottle. Triple wrap it to guard against leaks and pack it with the rest of your gear. I use a TuffPac so packing a one piece cleaning rod and cleaning supplies is a snap. I always leave behind my cleaning supplies since they are hard to come by in the bush. ![]()

Thanks for the feedback. Zero Drift, I agree on leaving the cleaning supplies. On my last trip to RSA, I left my patches, Hoppes #9, and Rem Oil. Very much appreciated. RCG

I like, no prefer, Breakfree CLP here at home. For African hunting although, I take those foil packed gun wipes made by Birchwood Casey. They are handy, the "lube" dries and doesn't hold dust and sand badly. After opening, I put them in a ziploc and use them again, and after several wipes use pieces to swab barrels. Kudude

I would NOT use break Free as a lubricant in a dusty conditions .One range near by has an abrasive dirt and high winds.I had used a very thin film of Break Free on the bolt of a Witcha 1375 bench gun wipping it each time I cleaned .I found that I had excessive wear on the body and threads for the firing pin as the combination of dust and Break free created a situation which retained the dirt creating a lapping compound. If you have the room for guns bring a few good cleaning rods as the bore snakes just will not clean properly . Glenn

I have tested a lot of solutions to prevent rust and find TW-25 B works very well when wiped on external surfaces.
