I started using Hoppes as a kid (my dad did). I made a batch of Ed's Red and like it every bit as well----except doesn't have the Hoppes smell. (possibly the HUGE crowd of women that chase after me dwindled a small amount----but at my age I have earned a little rest). Ed's Red has 4 basic ingredients and a dab of anhydrous lanolin. I bought a quart of each and of all things this makes a gallon. I store it in a Coleman fuel can. I have a Hoppes jar I use from and refill from the Coleman can as needed. The 4 things are (1) ATF--some that like to make it rocket science use all specs--but I figure any will work (2) kerosene--if you cant find any you can use lamp oil. (3)acetone--paint store, Lowes carry this (4) turpentine or mineral spirits. Glob of anhydrous lanolin---pharmacy can provide--they might have to order it. For patches it is cheaper to buy cheap cotton material and cut your own. If it's not real small cal you can use weed eater line to pull your patches. A piece of the .065 line folded and ran through bore then cut a piece of cloth and put in the loop and drag it out. You can drag a much tighter patch than you can push through with a rod. You wont damage anything with weed eater line---Heck even a Glock is harder than the line. For smaller cals you can do same thing with heavy fishing line. For a cheap bore light, the best thing I have found is a fiber optics stinger that attaches on a mini mag flashlight. I know Wal Mart carries them. They make 2 lengths of stinger (dont know the lengths right off--I got the long one and it's about 18".) They just slide over end of flashlight and are flexible and have fiber optics running through. They light up a bore very well. You can get the flashlight, stinger and a holster for your flashlight for under $20 last time I looked. | |||
