desolving Plastic shotgun wad buildup

Someone from another forum has asked me about something that will desolve shotgun plastic wad buildup. He is traveling to Argentina to bird shoot and is concerned about putting anything in his luggage what with the current attitude at the airports. I have noticed that many of you use Break or Carb. spray. Will that remove plastic wad material? Either one should be available in Argentina.
THanks

I wouldn't bother with any solvents at all. Just plain gun oil and a tight fitting bronze brush. That how I clean my shotgun barrels.

Hoppe's makes a Spiral Wound brush called the "Tornado Brush" that is really excellent for smooth bores and revolver chambers. It is made with stainless wire, but the "side" of the wire is what makes contact, not the cut end.

I just use what ever Bore Cleaner is at hand and a Tornado Brush to give it a few scrubs. Then wipe it down with a tight fitting Paper Patch and the bore glistens like a hall of mirrors.

I'd carry the Tornado Brushes in the "Check-In Luggage" and buy Bore Cleaner once I got there. Carrying any kind of aerosol or bottled cleaner onto a plane is not something I'd want to do. Not sure it is even legal to do so anymore.

Best of luck to your buddy.

Ditto Hot Core - The Tornado brush cuts plastic and lead fouling very quickly. After you make 10 passes down the tube with the Tornado brush, wrap a Kleenex around a bronze bore brush and make a few passes. The bristles on the brush hold the Kleenex in place. Finish with a light oil.

I was taught by a master gunsmith to wrap a 12g bronze brush with 4 ought steel wool install it in a rod , chuck it into a drill, add a little hoppes then power clean the shotgun bore by making a couple of full length passes, gets rid of plastic, powder and lead.Clean with a clean patch and very lightly oil the bore.

83,
I have used a similar technique myself, but that doesn't work in the field and my friend is heading south for a high volumne dove shoot. He needs a technique he can use in the field.
Thanks Jack

Thanks guys, I'm who Winggunner is referring to. I shoot a lot of skeet (15k+ shells/year) and use the tornado brush a lot. Most fouling occurs in the choke tube and in that case I chuck up a copper brush in the drill and ream them out.

My concern was as stated, that I didn't want to mess around with cleaning solvents in my luggage. At the same time I'm concerned with the amount of plastic fouling that will occur with shooting 2,500 rounds through a gun with a very hot barrel. A friend that is going with me said that the outfitter told him that the shells don't have a plastic wad so to speak though Eeker . Makes you wonder what your paying $10/box for.

I was already going to bring the tornado brush. Without a cleaner, any idea on how well just the brush will clean?

Am I worried over nothing?

I'm not worried about shooting 2,500 rounds between cleanings, more worried about what shooting 2,500 rounds through a very hot barrel will do as far as wad or lead build up. Maybe I should be more worried about cleaning the choke then the barrel, since with skeet that is where most fouling seems to occur.

winggunner, The 4X steel wool/bronse brush and usually ten strokes with any standard solvent will clean the bore and choke with a follow up swab out of the solvent.

I use exactly this same procedure, except that I usually use Remington Brite Bore as my solvent. This procedure works infinitely better than anything else I ever tried.

For field trips I carry an Otis cleaning kit very compact and light weight.

Simply use a "cyclone brush" and WD-40 to get barrels clean.
Then I use LPS-3 as a preservative.
