Has anyone ever cleaned a rifle (wood) stock before?

I have one that is almost 57 years old and feels sticky? I don't know if the previous owner used an oil or something on it but I would like to clean it and use the correct oil (what kind do you recommend?)

Is there something I can use to clean it that will not damage, discolor, ruin the original stock wood?

Thanks

Justin

Just bought some this afternoon, thanks for the tip off! Is there anything you suggest putting on the stock after using the Murphy's?

A good paste wax will do. Johnson's or Bri Wax work well.
