I seek steel corrosion protection for a break-open rifle that would allow me to load and fire it without requiring me to clean the protection off. If it exists, please identify a corrosion preventative with lubricating characteristics that I can spray or wipe on exterior surfaces AND interior of barrel. If corrosion prevention with lubricant does not exist, corrosion prevention will be adequate. It's so simple to be wise. Just think of something stupid to say and then don't say it. Sam Levinson

I've used RIG. When you fire of course you change things. So after shooting swab the barrel. RIG is nice as with a light coating the gun is ready to fire ,no pre-cleaning is necessary .

Naphtali: Check this: http://www.dayattherange.com/?page_id=3667 I use and recommend Hornady One Shot TAP-HD Extreme. You can't go wrong with it. Jiri

About any good lubricant will prevent rust, the English used Vasoline on their doubles..I use WD-40 in humid areas and in dry areas I like Transmission fluid, (the pink stuff)..Test by Whites lab for the Nat.Rifle Assn. found transmission oil to be the pureist of oils, and the best protection. Most any of the good oils will work just fine, its not rocket science, its paying attention to the area and keeping it oiled, called maintaining. Use it sparingly and often. I use Eezox on my doubles and guns with no issues. Great thing about it is it goes on wet but protects dry so no dust attracting issues. Check out the tests done at 6 mm bar corrosion test . They recommend Corrosion X or Eezox. If you have that much to fight for, then you should be fighting. The sentiment that modern day ordinary Canadians do not need firearms for protection is pleasant but unrealistic. To discourage responsible deserving Canadians from possessing firearms for lawful self-defence and other legitimate purposes is to risk sacrificing them at the altar of political correctness." - Alberta Provincial Court Judge Demetrick

Mr. Atkinson: Good vaseline or oil will work of course. It worked 100 years ago and will work for now. But since that times, many good stuff has been discovered, including corrosion inhibitors. If added to any "carrier" (oil, vaseline, something dry to touch), it will extend protection. Those corrosion inhibitor are now added to commercial products, like WD-40 Specialist, Hornady One shot TAP HD Extreme and whatever. This is the reason these products win the contests. Corrosion inhibitors can be bought also separated and added to your favorite vaseline or oil as additive. I use this one (it is concentrated): https://www.cortecvci.com/Publ...9_and_VpCI-369_H.pdf And this one is already diluted with turbine oil (very slick pure oil): http://www.cortecvci.com/Publications/PDS/369D.pdf Already made my own gun cleaning/lubricating mix, used trichlorethylene as solvent. It cleans, lubricates and protects exceptional, but it is oily/slick on touch. There are also water soluble corrosion inhibitors (made by the same and other company). They can be used diluted (in small concentrations) for rinsing brass after wet tumbling (brass will last shining), can be used between polishing with sand paper under water and hot bath blueing or whatever. Different stuff is used for protecting electronics in harsh environment etc. Jiri

Canuck32: I know that test. It is pretty old one. Used to Eezox too. But there are better product out there. I compared Eexoz and Hornady One Shot Tap HD Extreme (what the hell long name) side by side. Hornady cleans better, doesn't smell so bad (no trichlorethylene), and dry faster. Didn't test them personally for corrosion protection capabilities. This is more actual test: http://www.dayattherange.com/?page_id=3667 In the test, there is "Hornady One Shot", not the better "HD Extreme" version. Jiri

We like G96 or CorrosionX on the coast for protection from salt spray. I prefer G96. velocity is like a new car, always losing value. BC is like diamonds, holding value forever.
