So when I read stuntpilot2's post on cleaning I tried the "SNOT" concauction that arkypete posted, 1/2 Kroil x 1/2 Black Powder Solvent, (I used KnighT concentrate) on a buddie's 223 with some good results! Smiler
I figured since it worked there I would try it on a couple of other "clean" bores. Well I found that some were good but, had one that was nasty. Not sure what it was but it was dark tan and nasty. Took multiple scrubbings to get clean.
What I did/do is run a couple of saturated patches through, then wet down a bronze brush and run it back and forth a dozen or so times then let it sit for a few hours. (do it before work, when I get home and then again before I crank out for beddy bye)
Well I bought a used rifle and tore it down to go through everything and clean it. When I got to the barrel I gave it a once over with solvent and said "hey that ain't too bad." Then I gave it a swab with WipeOut accelerator and then the WipeOut. Let it sit for a couple of hours and "hey that ain't too bad."
Well as I was shoving the patch through, it didn't feel like bare metal smooth. I decided to "SNOT" it and see what happens!

All I could say was "OH MY!"

This is the first six:

I have done this same scrub about another dozen times and they are still coming out like this:

Here is another one with the flash on. Notice the "clay" like stuff. (I just did another, and am getting the same)

Since I started using "SNOT" I have found that you must run a wet patch through and then saturate the brush and run it through. IT HAS TO SIT! I tried to run patches right behind a brushing with not enough to make it worth the waste of a patch.

PS It took about thirty scrubbings to get the one barrel clean. I am up to about 20 right now and it almost looks like I am not making headway but, I know I am.

PPS I haven't compared it to stuntpilot2's JB on a brush as this is kinda a nice lazy way to get there that seems to work!

PPPS Thanks again arkypete! beer

Here's something else to try:

CONTENTS: Ed's Red Bore Cleaner

1 part Dexron ATF, GM Spec. D-20265 or later.

1 part Kerosene - deodorized, K1

1 part Aliphatic Mineral Spirits

CAS #64741-49-9, or substitute "Stoddard Solvent", CAS #8052-41-3, or equivalent.

1 part Acetone, CAS #67-64-1.

(Optional 1 lb. of Lanolin, Anhydrous, USP per gallon, or OK to substitute Lanolin, Modified, Topical Lubricant, from the drug store)

I'll take a gallon bucket of the stuff to the range to soak pistols in while I shoot others, then clean before taking them home.
I'll use the same stuff for rifles at the range. Drop the muzzle in the bucket and use the cleaning rod as a piston to draw the fluid up the barrel, repeat several times. Let rilfe set for a while, then clean normally.

That 'snot' does a fine job.

Thanks for the results smedley.

Any chance that's cosmoline?

I could still get cosmo out of my CZs after several hundred rounds and cleanings.

Of all things, 3-N-1 proved to be the best cosmo "solvent".

The ER I made works pretty well. I like the lanolin because it makes the solvent a little thicker,or seems to, and definitely enhances rust protection.

I'm thinking I will use ER for cast bullets and overnight soakings, bore full, to try to limit the brush strokes.

Edit: Whoops! I went back and re-read sp2's thread and see that you already suggested cosmo.

After about 20 some rounds of scrubbing and soaking it has finally got to where the patches are coming out with just a little carbon.
There is still a little something hanging on the edges of the lands. I am gonna get after it with a little JB and see what I can come up with.
I stll have know idea what the "cake" stuff was/is????? I don't think this barrel had cosmoline. I am not sure of the previous owners cleaning habits. It may be just a long time build up of not getting the carbon out and then oiling the barrel and not cleaning the bore before another trip to the bench. Not sure!
Have a buddy that after a day at the bench will push patches of solvent through it till they come out clean, then patch till dry, then one oil patch a clean patch and back in the closet with no case or cover. He will pull it out before the next session and shove one patch through and start squeezing rounds. If it will stay within a couple inches at 100, he considers it good to go!
Should have it about cleaned up this weekend. If it is I am gonna head to the range and see what it will do!!!!!

Does the Black powder solvent that you used contain "lubricant"? I'am trying to find the exact formula that you are using. Thanks

I tried Snot last night on a rifle that is almost new with just about 100 rounds through it. I've cleaned this rifle many times during this 100 round using Hoppes Elite,Warthog and wipe out I thought it was clean- Squeeky clean.
Well an overnight soak with Snot and the patch came out BLACK something going on here. Now I'm wondering if this level of clean is desireable.

Political correctness offends me.

Is this a process of the snot being converted to the black clay stuff? I had a friend telling me how great JB was because it was getting all of the black stuff out of his barrel. Then I had to explain to him the black stuff coming out of his barrel was the JB.....
