Friend of mine having issues with a 257Wea after firing a box of Wea ammo. I suggest he clean barrel. Wipe-Out sits for an hour and when patch is pushed through it comes out BROWN.

Barrel is stainless, Remington 700 VSSF.

I was expecting blue or blue-green. BROWN??? Anyone have a clue what is going on here?

Carbon will cause brown patches as stated on the Wipeout site.

I'm with the others, it says brown is indicative of carbon on the bottle I have.

I always get some brown patches too.

The stuff works really well.

It is more than likely the Carbon.

i strongly suggest your friend use a Carbon remover like Hoppe's No 9 first and then use Wipe Out AND do this alternating a couple of times.

Sometimes, the carbon is so baked onto the top of the copper you really do need to alternate between a Carbon Remover and Wipe Out.

Wipe-Out/Patch-Out Accelerator takes out carbon (I think). I use it alternately with Patch-Out until the black (carbon?) stops coming out and then finish with Patch-Out.

Accelerator is only supposed to speed up
how fast Wipe Out works. I have never read
it as a Carbon cleaner.

Terry, the same guy who makes Wipe Out
makes specific carbon cleaners.

Either way, I would always use a
specific carbon cleaner like Hoppe's
to clean out the Carbon.

Use a good carbon solvent first, then Wipeout, sometimes the carbon is even layered between layers of copper requiring intermittent use of carbon solvent and Wipeout. There's also CarbOut, another fine product from the maker of Wipeout.

I've always had good luck using a couple of patches wet with alcohol, then apply wipe-out.

the folks at Wipeout will tell you that much of the carbon comes from burnt oil, this is the oil that is left in the barrel after cleaning and before shooting. They claim that wipeout can be left in the barrel after cleaning instead of a oil and this will keep the carbon from being created.

Once a barrel is really fouled, with carbon and/or copper, J&B is the quickest way to get ALL of it out, as far as I know...

And if any rifle can have a badly fouled barrel it could be a 257 WBY. Big Grin

Best of my knowledge, this guy has only fired 20rounds in his rifle, and he bought it NIB.

Over bore, hot gases, 20 rounds enough to
really dirty and cake on a barrel, especially if fired one after the other.
