Teflon inside a barrel

I've heard to not use oils with teflon inside the bore of a rifle, OK. If it is than what will happen and how do you remove it? The reason I ask is that when cleaning my 220 swift last, a visual into the mouth of the muzzle looked like I wasn't getting all the nitro residue out. It didn't look like bare steel except on the lands. I use break free on some things and I'm thinking I may have oiled the bore down with it and this may be what I see. Also when pushing the cleaning rag down the bore it pushes smoothly the first 8-10" and then it feel like more resistance slightly.

This rifle usually puts everything into .3-.5" and now it's a 3/4" gun. Some/any advice is needed please.

Have you tried Wipe Out? I don not know if there are any side effects to using teflon in the barrel. As far as the accuracy goes your rifle may like a little fouling in the barrel. It may take a few rounds for the barrel to settle down.

The rumor I heard is that the teflon will decompose under the heat and pressure of firing. When it does it becomes HF, or hydrogen flouride (dissolved in water its hydroflouric acid, VERY nasty) gas. That would be one highly corrosive gas to be in your barrel in any amount.

Given the conditions required to MAKE teflon, I highly doubt there is much breakdown, but I have never tested for it myself. I wouldn't worry too much about it, but there are other teflon free oils you can use that are as good or better for coating a bore.

Removal...the first shot is pretty much going to do that for you...normal cleaning solvents should get most teflon (it's suspended in the oil when you apply it!) out if unfired.

Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.

Microlon Gun Juice is a mix of teflon resins. It is made and marketed specifically for gun barrels. It also works!

I've used the Remington gun oil with Teflon and have had no side effects to my knowledge.

Twitch, twitch, twitch..... Big Grin

I don't believe what little bit of teflon is left inside the barrel after cleaning is enough to worry about or cause any damage. Just my opinion from several years of using it.

Good shooting,

HL

Rem Oil contains teflon which is why I use it to protect the exterior of my rifles.

In the Sinclair catalog is specificaly states that teflon is NOT TO BE USED in the bore. I am no scientist, but I have found the boys at sinclair to be some damn educated shooters. FWIW
